A/C Pulley Belt Replacement 99 Lanos

Post by naznomad »

I got a replacement A/C pulley belt,but not sure if it is the right part. It's a Duralast V Belt part, no. 17330. Thats what Autozone matched it up with but it looks like it's wrong.
When I went out to to try to change it,I noticed that it is way too long,I can get my fist through the amount of slack. Is the pulley adjustable? If so it would seem to me that I would need to adjust it out way too much to get this thing to fit. The print on the packaging says its 84cm ,or 33.1 inches. Does that sound right? If not,how long should it be? What am i missing?

Looking at this pic below,it goes around the 2 wheels shown dosn't it?

thanks

Must be gettin pretty hot in L.V. with no a/c huh ? :lol:
It's 109 (F.) here today.
It it wasn't so hot, ? I would jump on my bike and ride out and help you install it.

If AutoZone got that number off their computer ? It is the correct belt. I got mine from them.
You could always call them to verify it though.

And YES, you can and need to adjust it. The lower (small pulley) is the adjustment pulley. Check it for smooth rotation when you have it off.
You also need to safely block up your car, remove the wheel and plastic splash shields to get at it.

One of these threads describes how to do it.
Also ?
There are thread (links) within the posts, so look em all over.

Thanks Spider. Yeah the small pulley does spin freely. So how many wheels is it meant to go round, just 2? Seriously,the amount of slack is not just a little bit,this thing looks like its about 8 inches too long. Will it adjust out that much ?

Well, the belt goes around the engine pulley, the adjuster pulley and the A/C pulley. Thats three.

Ok, I dug out my paperwork and this is what i got:
(This is the belt I have on my woo. Its been doing fine now for about 5k miles.)

This 411 is from the cardboard "strap" that comes wrapped around the belt:

``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Store=AutoZone
Brand=Good-Year "Gatorback"
Part number=17331 (13AV0840) The number under the bar-code=37256 01424
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

It does not list the actual length. As I recall I had a choice, the Duralast or the Good-Year.
Maybe give them a call ?

So it is 3. I was looking at it from underneath,probably why I only saw 2 pulleys. I knew 2 didnt sound right,just couldnt see the third from where i was.

OK,I got the belt on,woohoo ! Adjusted it so there was a slight amount of slack when pressed with fingers,but not too much so it slips.

But the Woohoo was short lived,even though it turns and the a/c comes on,its not blowing anything that is remotely cold.

The last time I used my a/c was before I had my engine replaced in March. Would the refrigerant have to be recharged because of this fact ? I'm guessing that when he took the bits off my old engine to put on the replacement, the refrigerant would have all pissed out into thin air (?) If thats all it is then I could get it recharged right? How hard is it to do ones-self? I think have seen the kits at the auto parts store,but I've never used one. I like to DIY (helps me learn) but don't know where to start.
I tried looking for a How To.. here but couldn't see one. Any links to posts with pics that might help me?

thanks

I just read that only certified people can get hold of that stuff. Is that true? If thats the case I guess I'll have to take it to the shop.
By the way,can someone point out which is the low side that it needs to be connected to to fill it? Pic ?

I just checked that valve and it has the green screw off cap with the letter H imprinted on it. Maybe someone put the wrong cap on it.

Daewoomofo what does yours read on there, L or H ?
