Wat i did was i used 12v source from the cigaret lighter and then wired it in with the dimmer so that when i dim the lights low the gauge turns on. This keeps a clean look.

earth= good clean earth under dash, straight to bare metal.
Power source=At ignition barrel, this is where all prime current goes to, beside the battery.(cannot remember which wire, it is a bug one though, test with a test light go for the one which light up when you turn the ign to on(run) this will ensure your battery does not die when car is turned off. (meter still on)

yea when i dim my lights the gauge light turns on. If i turn it about half way then there even. The reasone i had to do this is that when i pluged it to the regular power wire it kept blowing a fuse, this way it dosent blow any fuses. Hopefully in the future i will figure somthing elso out but for now its good

all you need is a good ground and a good key on power source, you might have to do some probing around to find one but there are alot of them. then you will need a power source for the light. with the way you have it right now you prolly arent getting a correct reading.
