It's aliiiiiive!
After swapping out a broken engine (timing belt) I started the new doaner engine today. It was a scary proposal. I was worried that the new timing belt would fly off or some other catastrophe. I did get a check engine light. But could this be because I had the air cleaner off and the electric connection to it off as well?
Remember, the engine only (supposedly) has 27,000 miles. I heard a rather loud (to me) tick coming from the valve area, or top of the engine. The sound sort of diminished with it running for a few minutes. I had the spark plug cover off, as well as the air breather and hood.
Anyhow, the car is all back together. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks to all who helped and advised!
Woo Hoo! the car is done.

congrats! I also heard a loud ticking noise that diminished within a few minutes after starting my car up when it had been sitting for a long time. Also yes, with the air temp sensor unplugged, you will get a check engine light.

CEL due to disconnected IAT sensor (sensor in air intake tube), loud ticking is tappies... this is normal for cold engines as long as it fades away afer a short while.
congrats on the swap job.

Ok, so I ventured out farther and it runs great! I went about 20 miles- in the driving, blinding, slippery snow:(
A weird thing- both fans came on and stayed on a long time. I was ready to worry I hooked a wire up wrong but they quit eventually. Also, the radio wouldn't work without a code- Daewoo (Mazda) wanted $40 to do it or if I took the radio out and read the numbers off to them they'd do it for free.
Just what I wanted to do- rip apart my car I spent two weeks putting back together.
Sooo, while I was in talking to the body shop guy, my wife stared inputting numbers into the radio and got THE CODE! She is cool.
So my Car Karma is coming back.
Oh, yeah. My check engine light went out.

Great news New !
You do good work.
And fast too.
Sounds like your car is good for LOTs and LOTS of miles now !
P.S. nice to have all those extra parts from your old engine, huh ?
