Quick guidance questions : 99 Leganza 2.2L timming and Cam

Post by slaponte »

Hi guys. Newbie to these forums, not a newbie to forums in general.

A very good friend (well, his son) has a 99 Leganza 2.2L in need of some repairs. I have worked on many cars, including engine replacement, tranny, etc over the last 26 years so not a newbie to mechanic work, but never have worked on a Leganza. Some guideline questions if you don't mind.

- an easy one : all I have read is the Leganza only had the one and only engine, the 2.2L DOHC. Correct?

- The engine code points to the Camshaft Positioning sensor. The shop says you have to get pass the timming belt so might as well. Correct?

- Timming belt, does it have tensioner and idler (both)? Should all be replaced (while in there)?

- Is the timming belt on the 2.2L considered "easy"? I have worked Fords, Fiats, VWs, Nissans, etc... some of these are easy (remove cover, replace belt), some are a pain in the you-know-what... Just an opinion please.

I know, I know, we need the service manual. I asked him to purchase one for me online, he is working on it. In the meantime, if somebody can share that page, I can look it over.

welcome to the forum... does the son of that friend of yours happen to own a silver leganza??

nope... that is not correct, the leganza came with a 2.0 DOHC as well... it actually depends on where on the planet you are, if you are from USA then your statment is considered to be correct.
- The engine code points to the Camshaft Positioning sensor. The shop says you have to get pass the timming belt so might as well. Correct?
never had to replace a cam position sensor before as daewoos here in this part of the planet are not OBDII... anyways i don't see why the belt should be removed unless you are going to remove one or both cam gears to reach for the cam position sensor's bolts.
- Timming belt, does it have tensioner and idler (both)? Should all be replaced (while in there)?
it has two idlers and one tensioner... all of them should be replaced with the belt and the water pump as well.

as far as i am concerned it is easy... it only involves removing the front engine mount to remove the belt but other than that it is not that hard.
