18" Alloy wheels

Post by suyazjm »

I have Daewoo 2001 Leganza CDX. The car has 18" Diamo 6.5 Karat rims.

The orignial owner told me that the rims are original, however I don't beleive that.

Is 18" safter than 15"?

Thanks

the previous owner is wrong for sure... leganzas came with 15" rims

i am not sure if you mean Softer or Safer with "Safter" though.

If you meant safer:
I'm sure with the added weight of 18's your braking distance is a bit farther... And your acceleration would definately take a hit as well...

If you meant softer:
You're most likely on some pretty low profile tires, and low profiles often give more feedback feeling of the road to the driver/passengers... You can feel more of the road because theres less of an air cushion to ride on that would normally absorb the impact of say cracks in the road...

+1

just wanna say that the acceleration and braking effects are not solily affectid by the bigger rim... the wider tire and lower profile has a great effect here.

in acceleration: the better gripping tire will make you able to put more force to your launch without spinning your tires in vain thus you will get better take off.

in braking: again the better traction of the tires will make it easyer to step on the brakes and slow down the wheels than just instantly lock them and skid all over the road.

in real world: the weight effect of the bigger rim is more than the better grip effect of the wider tire so your overall acceleration performance will suffer... still a good upgrade if you are going to turbo the car in the future or so.

the brakes effect on the other hand will benefit more from the tires grip rather than the extra weight gained so you will have better braking experiance even though it is now harder to go as fast as you used to do with the old 15" rims.

needles to say that the lower profile tires will boost your road feedback and will make your driving a different experiance... i did an upgrade to my lanos - wasn't so drastic as what you are planing - and i got to tell you that better feedback is what you are looking for.

now i have much better response from my steering and cornering is way better than before... got to say that bumps are more noticable now and the car is a bit nervous when treated hard but that is not a bad thing as long as you know the fact that this is because you are feeling every thing the road communicates to your wheels.
