RAM pipe idea
hi guys
i was thinking of this idea for some kinda ram pipe for my stock intake setup.
i had the intake resonator removed, removed the fog light cover and kept the Y shaped pipe attached to the OEM box... now i am thinking of making an extension pipe from the bottom of the air box to the fog llight hole using 2.5" PVC pipes so that when you are going fast (100 km/h or higher) the air flow through the fog hole is kinda forced into the air box and cause a mild pressure that helps the engine breathing.
is that a good idea? i mean is it worth the effort? i know air is beeng blowen hard at such speeds and can make some difference... OK it won't add some 10HP pr so but still for the money and effort spent for the expected gain i see it is going to pay off.
what do you think guys? should i go for it or is it not worth the effort??

I did that.
Left the Y pipe attached to the bottom of the airbox and hooked a tube to the bottom of the Y pipe where the resonator used to be.
I did each stage of the intake mods seperately and drove around for a while and I thought each mod made a difference....
- K&N Panel Filter
- Remove resonator
- Ram hose to the bottom of the Y pipe
Made a noticeable difference especially in second gear between say 40 and 75km/h and again in third, It started to pick up and go quite nicely.
I'd highly recommend it (especially since you can do it REALY cheaply), i used some bright blue bendy vacuum cleaner hose for that
and clamped it with a hose clamp to the bottom of the Y pipe and zip ties to the front bar.

Is a good move, 'cos the coolest air is about 4 inches above the tarmac surface with respect ot a car height.... on the track anyway, or so i have been told by techies at track days etc.
My Lanos has been done, and no real harm done, probably there is a positive effect, but VERY hard to appreciate, any cool air assistance makes for better volumetric efficiency, even though it could be a fraction of a percent increase, it all adds up overall.
Only one problem, hit a deep patch of water, and you get a good charge of water slapped up the pipe.
When i stripped out the excess inlet air tubing on her, I semi-sealed the area in front of the wheel arch, and the air is taken from there via the intake tube to the Filter, and i hope it will act as a water trap in case it does.... No news though, not really had bad flooding yet!!!
This water problem happened to a friend of mine with a Volvo turbo, and he got hydrualic lock on one cyl, and bent a rod!!.

we hardly get any rain in here so i am almost covered against that threat... also the pipe will be facing forward rather than downward so it is hard to suck water from under the car.

yes i am... in fact when i get a cone filter i am going to shorten the ram pipe and fit the filter in the wheel well as well and will throw way the OEM filter but will keep the OEM air box.
this way the "under the hood" view is 100% stock but underneth its a real CAI.
