Alternator or Battery

Hi,

Can anyone advise how to determine whether the battery cannot retain the charges or the alternative is faulty ?

take your battery to a parts store (autozone, advance auto, napa, pep boys, car quest, o'reilly, big auto, big m, etc) and get them to test the battery. they can tell you in a matter of minutes if the battery is holding charge or not.

Also, with the engine running measure the voltage across the battery terminals. It should read above 13V.

the way u can tell the alternators funny is when the indicators turn on and off then the rpms drop to zero then the mph needle turns off and on then by the time u know ur cars messed up ur cars engine turns off... u brake then have no brake... then if ur doing 80mph on 65mph theres some cars infront of u stopped u brake then u found out u have no brake then u hit them... to late

optima does 13.1 the other ones do 12 to 13

shouldn't a properly working charging system should be putting out 13, no matter the band of battery?
