well... I have worked on the damn thing to get it fixed as Tom suggested and it really works :idea: ... it took me long time to get it right though, you know the first trial on anything always involves too much "bumps".

First I filled the gas tank to the top so I know that the gauge is supposed to be at the top mark on the scale.

then I took off the dash and got the cluster out and removed its clear cover, then I removed the needle and placed it some 3mm upwards...the point is the fuel gauge doesn't sit on that little stopper at the bottom of the gauge like the temp gauge... it is always hanging on to its position and during the uninstallation of the needle the think flicks too much.

I installed the cluster back and hooked the sockets with the clear cover off and started the car... the needle was way off the scale, it even passed the top mark by some 3mm :evil:

I figured that the gauge is not that responsive i.e. if you move the needle with your hand it won't settle at the correct position right away so I took off the needle again with the car turned on and cluster hooked up and waited for 1 min. till it settles correctly then I installed the needle back.

I was very careful not to flick the thing while I was putting it back... it is too damn easy to do that while installing the needle. Also waited for 1 min. again to make sure the needle is pointing to the correct location... I don't want to put everything back then find out that the gauge is still off.

After making sure it is pointing the right way, I reinstalled everything back on... the trick really works - thanks Tom - and I probably will make a how to out of it to help other people out.

I remember a friend of mine had similar problems and he was told at the dealers that the sending unit of the fuel gauge is bad and he have to replace it, the thing is this unit is integrated into the fuel pump so he needed a new fuel pump to fix the gauge. :shock:

good stuff, now just need one for the speedo calibration :P . i forgot to mark it and now its off its mark :x

On my Lanos, when you pull out the pin, the speedo needle drops directly downward, I'm talking 270 degrees straight down, right where it says MPH, sort of right on the P.

another way to do it is to get a GPS and go on a road no one uses.. pull the pin off and go using the GPS as a Speedo gauge and set it that way. the GPS will tell you what speed you are moving at so you can set it

theoretically that will be correct but taking into consideration that you try to put back the needle during driving the car... it will be too damn hard.

i guess it will be better to keep the needle on and estimating how much off the scale it is (pointing at 45MPH @ 40MPH) then do the calibration when the car is parked.
