Rear Brakes... Compatability question

Does anyone know if the rear brake hub assembly from a 4 stud astra G would bolt on to the lanos beam?

In Aus, we only have mk3+ astras and only the mk3 gsi came with rear discs... so hard to find :evil:

but Mk4/Gs are plentiful. The mount on to the beam looks similar... but that doesn't mean anything, lol
we didn't get vectra As either. our first vectra was the B with 5 studs :roll:

so yeah, any info would be great :D

anything compatible with an Astra MK2 will work on your lanos since they are the same chassis.

There are a number of Astra guys who move to the 5 bolt pattern, so it is an option if your out of luck.

I've been thinking about switching to a 5 bolt and then moving to a Porsche 5 X 130 pattern so I can get nice wide tires to handle the power I want to put down.

www.Migweb.co.uk should have lots of info and probably be able to tell you if an Astra MK2 can accept Astra G brake hubs.

Worse comes to worse you could say screw it to the mount and weld them on, my Kadett E (Astra MK2) had it's rear hubs welded instead of bolted.

I ended up getting them, 4 stud astra G rear brakes with 240mm discs, the mounting looks the same (2 narrow bolts and two wider bolts)

they will be going on when I have the front brakes sorted as I don't think 240mm rears with 236mm fronts would work very well.... :D

now just to decide whether I try to hunt down 256mm brakes that are cheap and in reasonable condition or if I go straight to a 288mm vectra set-up from LMF vauxhall (price of postage is more than the kit :evil: )

i think the 288mm kit is too much for a stock 1.5 or a 1.6 or even a stock 2.0... remember that this setup (256mm front + rear disks) is similar to a 2.0 opel vectra and that is a heavier car than a lanos and no one complained from braking power on them cars... also the 288mm setup will require a minimum of 15" rims

I'm going to 2.2l leganza/vectra motor and i have 17" rims ;)

to do a 256mm upgrade with brand new parts it would cost ~$200 for discs ~$250 for rotors and ~$50 for pads so $500aus for 256mm or $600 for 288mm INCLUDING postage from the UK
(whenever i find them used, the seller tells me the price and then doesn't answer emails anymore :chain: )

another option is to just make the LMF kit myself... I'd still get their custom 288mm discs so i wouldn't have to go to all the trouble re-drilling vectra discs etc etc and then just get the vectra calipers and brackets second hand.

it keeps me up at night thinking about it... lol :D
and i can't wait for the engine swap, but the important stuff has to be done first :smt066

with the 2.2 engine you gotta fabricate a front engine mount... that is going to be tricky... please keep me posted as i am thinking of a similar project and i got no ideas so far for that custom mounts

i have the front mount from garrett and the power steering and alternator bracket are in the post.

i won't have aircon. as far as i know you have to choose between aircon and PAS, i really don't mind and there's the weight saving benefit (probably better to have aircon in egypt though lol)

do you know if the nubira 22mm master cylinder is the same as the lanos one mohammed?

when this engine swap gets going, i will do a write up, but it probably won't be for another year, when i finish university

sure thing... it is some 41C degrees at the time being here so you can imagine the situation without A/C... still PAS is a major requirement... i will see what we can do about that and again if you have links to similar projects or pics I'd really appreciate it

this is only valid for the 1.6 DOHC lanos as it has 19mm wheel pistons and 256mm rotors... on the other hand the 1500 and 1350 cc lanos got 20mm master cylinder and 17mm wheel pistons along with the 235mm rotors... and they don't work at all

i was driving dad's car (1.5 SOHC with stock brakes) last friday and i made the pads smoke within 4 kms of "spirited" driving.. at one junction i was ready to yank the e brake and revert to engine braking to stop the car as the brakes were not slowing the car at all.
when this engine swap gets going, i will do a write up, but it probably won't be for another year, when i finish university

Other than Garrett's mount there is a stock GM mount that works just fine for dropping 2.0L and 2.2L engines into a lanos.

Here in North America ( as well as a pile of other places in the world ) the Astra MK2 had a 2.0L 8V or 2.0L 16V as a stock engine option

Since the Lanos is based on the Astra MK2 you simply need to buy one of these engine mounts ( new or used )


As far as power steering, it is a pain to go without if you don't change over the rack.

I have a turbo Passport Optima ( Astra Mk2 ) without power steering and the standard hydraulic rack and she is really tough to manage in parking lots.

There is a "manual" rack which helps quite a bit but of course that affects the feel of the steering during cruising.

I have gone ahead and purchased an Electric/hydraulic power steering unit from a newer Astra to solve this problem, I just haven't got around to installing it yet due to other priorities such as getting the engine maps tuned on my new megasquirt engine management system.

that's what mrG did but he had to upgrade his alternator to handle everything
