PMGR starter

Post by 2 liter turbo »

I'd like to upgrade my Sunbird to a permanent magnet gear reduction starter like most of your newer cars have. Nothing like that was used in the US by GM on the 2.0 but I was wondering about the rest of the world like on a Vauxhall, Opel or Daewoo, I have a guy in the UK who wants to sell me one from a 1990 up Vauxhall but I don't know if it's a gear reduction type or if it'll mate up to my automatic trans flexplate. Anybody have any info on a swap like this?

Just to follow up on this, the later mk2 Astra/Kadett and all mk3 Astra/Kadett's and other later Vauxhalls/Opels had PMGR starters fitted as standard. I suspect the Daewoo's do as well. They weigh 3kg and are smaller than the older field coil types.
Brise also make an aftermarket PMGR starter for the 2.0L OHC/DOHC engines but there is no weight difference between the Brise and the stock item.
