What did they say that the check engine light was? It would make it a lot easier to diagnose. Could be ignition-related.
Is your car any Automatic or Standard transmission? Because I have an ECU I could sell you! For a lot less than 600 Pounds. Maybe 599.95?
I'm just kidding. Tell us why the engine threw the light and we'll be able to help further.

Surely if there's white smoke, that'd have pretty much NOTHING to do with the ECU seeing as it has no control over coolant burning, or water contaminating th oil etc.
Check your oil cap. Remove it, and look at the underside. It should be a golden dark brown/blacky brown. If there's any white or creamy spots on it you might have a problem.

as Pir0 said the ECU would not cause white smoke to come out of the exhaust, it could cause black smoke as the ecu controls the fuel injectors but not white smokePir0 wrote:Surely if there's white smoke, that'd have pretty much NOTHING to do with the ECU seeing as it has no control over coolant burning, or water contaminating th oil etc.
daewoomofo wrote:depends on what color the smoke was.
black= fuel burning
blue=oil burning
white=coolant burning
