Leganza Heater core

Post by leganza2000 »

Hi, two questions. Can the heater core be changed from under the dash? Where can a heater core be bought?

Thanks,
Dennis

Thanks for the link, good manual.

What I was wondering is can the heater core be changed without taking out the dash? I found this information on the net.

Thanks,
Dennis

From another person:
I just did this and it is pretty easy. Some cars need the whole dash to come out, but you can get everything out from underneath with the leganza. This is what I did: drained the water system disconnected the two hoses from engine bay took out all plastic trim including glovebox (and metal brace bar) took out centre console took out metal supporting bracket at front of centre console (makes it easier to pulls things out) unscrewed bottom plastic cover (loads of screws, some well hidden) unplugged pollen filter pipes and vacuum assists (not sure of the names! Everything that looked like it needed to come out, or just off) when everything is undone, just work the plastic shroud out. It is sealed with mastic at the front and needs some thumping. I broke several bits, including a bracket between the pipes, but nothing that would stop it being put back together, or working 100% Once the shroud is out of the way, the matrix is visible. unclip the top clip with a screwdriver and the matrix falls out. Took a couple of hours to do whole job, including replacement. I'm farily competent.

I just finished swapping out my heater core.
I didnt want to take out the whole dash as i was worried about having to disconnect the airbags and then reconnect them. So i went at it from under the dash. The previous post is accurate. That describes it pretty well.
It was not fun, it wasnt hard but it wasnt easy. I took a bunch of pictures of the process to make sure i put everything back the right way. Maybe someday ill post them as a how to on a website, but im pretty lazy so dont hold your breath.

So to sum up... i suggest that you buy your own part and take it somewhere and have them put it in. If i had a few more dollars and i was sure i was going to keep the car longer i would have paid someone. But if you want to do it yourself, you can. I did. without taking the whole dash off. It was more a PITA than actually difficult. The back of the box surrounding the heater core ends up cracked but closes back tightly, and i had to cut about a 1/4 inch off of one screw tab on the box to get it to drop out. It went back together easily and tightly, if i had to do it again i would still do it this way rather than take the dash out.

I have also replaced the heater core without tkaing the dash out. My car is equiped with the Climatronic from Daewoo, but I belive the only differences come from the controls: actuators instead of vacum controls. Anyway, I also cracked the heater (black) box, but this did not affect the final assembly. To be sure, after putting back al screws, I used some sanitary silicone so there are no air leaks ;)
