Synthetic oil question

Post by Jamus »

Manual for my 2000 Nubira wagon says to use 5w30,which I have been using. The dealer recommended I try AMSOIL 5w30 synthetic, which I did. It's a little pricey compared to conventional oil. This summer I put in a semi-synthetic to save a few bucks.I talked to a fella and he said when you move up to synthetic oil from conventional oil you should move up a grade(5w30 to 10w30).Does it matter? How will synthetic 10w30(or semi)compare to conventional 5w30 oil in the winter?I'm in the Great White North.Thanks.

5w-30 "Avarage" outsise temp ranges -20 to 80 degrees F

10w-30 "avarage" outside temp ranges 0 to 80 degrees F

Use the one that best fits. I live in Washington (State) and I use 5w-30 Castrol Syntec. These temps again are based on the avarage temps thoughout the year so it will be fine if you have a brief period of time under or above those temps. Hope this helps.

I am about to do a 10w30 synthetic change with Wal Mart brand Tech2000 full synthetic.
As long as the oil you choose meets or exceeds the federal oil standards (I can't think of what it is called right now), the brand of synthetic shouldn't make much differance.

As for price, the Wal Mart full synthetic oil is $11.88 per 5 quart jug, which is the same price as buying 4 individual quarts of the same thing.

Since the Lanos uses 4 quarts, I fill an empty oil bottle with a quart of the synthetic and keep it for later.
After paying for 4 synthetic jugs for oil changes, that leaves 4 extra quarts for a free oil change. :)

i use castrol synthetic 5w50 (manual recommends this for my state ((hot texas)), and my woo loves it so much. i switched from semi-synthetic castrol (10w30) and the startups are much quicker. the engine seems to have stopped the uneven idling that was occuring once or twice a week. ill never use non-synthetic oil again :)
