This actually happened last week.
Tuesday I got a call from my gf saying that her car was dead. She left the lights on and they're supposed to automatically turn off however that hasn't been working. This has happened 3 or 4 times already. So I got out there to give her car a jumpstart but the battery wont take a charge. So we get in the car and head home to pick up our son from daycare. After that we said the hell with it and went to a dealership to see about trading her car in for something newer. We test drove a few and decided on a nice blue 04 Saturn Vue AWD V6. We spoke with someone about financing and we needed to come up with $1000 along with the trade-in and figured we can do that over the next 3 weeks.
Well the next morning I had to drive her to work then drop off the title to her car. On the way back the woo start vibrating really bad and smoke starts pouring out the back of the car. I was doing about 80mph when then happened.
I somehow managed to keep it together and get the woo slowed down and pulled off to the side of the road.
I get out and walk around and noticed my rear driverside wheel sticking out about 6" past the fender.
So I called for a rollback since it obviously couldn't be towed like this. When they pulled it up on the back of the truck the wheel fell off the car with the brake drum attached.
To my best guestimate it seems like the rear bearings went all of a sudden. The heat from the friction caused the cotter pin that holds the axle nut in place nearly melted but was brittle enough to come apart. The axle nut itself backed off and it pretty mangled. The rear brakes are also completely wiped out.
I believe the only thing that help the wheel under the car long enough for me to pull off the road was the fact that my woo is lowered and the fender held the wheel under.
Luckily there is no body damage. I guess this is a good excuse to do the rear brake conversion now.
For now I'm driving my Honduh Accord.

photobucket's ectremely easy to use. If you cant get working at the inner arch for some proper maintainance, just grab some underbody seal or stonechip and spray/paint it on over where the tyre rubbed, obviously after removing dirt and grease etc, and giving it a bit of key to stick too
