Whats transmission oil should I use for my F28?
I'm finally expecting my F28 to arrive hopfully Friday and will start the install early-mid next week.
What transmission oil should I use? I'd like to stick with redline so what grade? I'll eventually be putting out up to 300whp, and will be raced for up to 30 min session in up to 120degree heat.
Thanks,
Danny

Hmm...this sucks. Upon quick search, Getrag F28 apparently requires special GM oil.
(GM part number) 9120541 - Gearbox Oil, also known as MTF0063. This oil is sold in 1L bottles, gbox holds 2.5l hence 3 bottles are required.
Full article here: http://www.ctor.co.uk/tech_guide.php?id=9
Search for the p/n reveals that Saab uses same fluid, so if GM fails then see your local Saab dealer.

Does gear oil go bad fast? I'd like to buy twice what it holds and store the rest till I need it...probably up to a year.
Ciao

Yes I know this is an old thread, but I will soon be coming to the same point. I was thinking about using Motul Gear 300. What do you guys think? Its 100% synthetic and have had great results with it in my D20. Although it is quite expensive, around $25 per litre locally.
"Ester-based and 100% synthetic, GEAR 300 is formulated for gearboxes and rear axles,
Specially designed for competition cars - racing circuit, rallies and endurance racing. GEAR 300 is test proven effective to extreme pressure resistance in all types of cars and under all types of uses. GEAR 300’s extremely high lubricity, reduces friction. It also offers anti-wear, anti-corrosion and anti-foam capabilities."

Well as far as i remember, i've always used Castrol SMX-S. Which is 75w-90 or 75w-85, can't really remember.
I used it in my f16, i'm gonna use it in my f20, and i'd probably use it in my f28 if i ever go down that route, but yeah, Roadrunner 16V said use SMX-S so, if that oil's good for an f28, your one you use should be spot on too looking at that pic you posted of the specs

Opel/Vauxhall state to use only their oil, specially formulated for this gearbox, and only used on a few other GM/Saab gboxes. I would do more research on F28 before using different brand. Its not like you can pick up 2nd hand F28 at a local car breaker.

From that first link you provided, I found the "workshop manual" for the Cavalier Turbo 4x4....... it has the specs for the gearbox and 4wd system.... heres what it says about the transmission oil:
Transmission
Lubricant .................................................................................Gear Oil 80W GL4 to Holden's Specification HN1820, HN1855 or equivalent
Lubricant Capacity ...................................................................1.8 litre

When I was looking into this on migweb most of the info said to stick with that specific gear oil

According to the service manual, the proper type of oil is "Gear Oil 80W GL4 to Holden's Specification HN1820, HN1855 or equivalent"kinkyllama wrote:+1.GsiTurbo wrote:Opel/Vauxhall state to use only their oil, specially formulated for this gearbox, and only used on a few other GM/Saab gboxes. I went to my Saab dealer today and asked what kind of MTF they had. They have never heard of the GM part no 9120541 or MTF0063??
However, they did show me this which looks very similar, but I can't confirm any part no's. What do you guys think? Price was around $13 per bottle.

Thats the one. According to this website (link already posted above) http://www.genuinesaab.com/catalog/prod ... ucts_id=89
the new part number for 9120541 is 93165290 - that is the part number on the bottle.
This write-up http://www.ctor.co.uk/tech_guide.php?id=9 indicates the gearbox holds approximately 2.5 liters, so 3 bottles are required.
Its nice to see GM actually uses "Made in EU" products

Cool to see this
I also changed my tranny oil approx. 2 years back......you know what they say - if it aint broke don`t fix it!!!!!LOL
Before I changed the oil I had perfect shifts right on the rev limiter with NO gearbox grinding noises.
After putting in ATF oil as per verbal recomendations from Delta SA - what a nightmare. Any shift over 6000rpm would result in gears grinding. I even went as far as to look as replacing the gearbox syncro`s.
After trying several types of oil with no improvement I found Castrol SMX gearbox oil - I am not sure about the grade, but it works OK. Maybe not as good as the factory fitted oil, but say 95% as good, so that is what I am running now.

Re: Whats transmission oil should I use for my F28?
Well I need to dig up this old thread because the SAAB dealers around me have closed up. When I phone other ones they tell me the part doesn't exist anymore and theres none in stock in Canada. I know alot of guys on migweb have said Castrol SMX-S has had very good results, but again its only available in the UK. Is there any other oil I can use that is available here (Canada / North America)???
