Leganza engine problems

Hi guys/gals. I bought a Leganza 1998 2litre manual last week. It has 95k miles on the clock, but I am having trouble when the car is in neutral. To start with it idles at about 2000 revs but when ithe engine warms a bit it seems to go 'searching', as in bounching between 1500 and 2000 rps. I think this is also somehow leading to excessive fuel consumption (approx 40 miles per 10 litres of fuel. But not sure as the fuel gauge seems to be tempremental too, seems to drop when I go around corners but not go to the orignal level).

Also on the engine 2 pipes have been sealed off by the previous owner, i dont know the name of the engine parts so here is a photo

The first pipe is coming of the 'white' circular looking thing and is suoopesed to go into the black sensor looking thing in the center of this picture (the plastic box with the red wire going into it.

in the second picture there is a red and black looking pipe that has also been blocked off.

So what i am asking is what is the plastic box that the pipes are supposed to be running into? and will that cause excessive fuel consumption and the erratic revving.

Also if it is any help the engine temperature gauge only goes to just above a quarter.

Thanks for reading, any help you could offer would be a god send.

Btw i had the injectors cleaned and all the plugs changed today in hope of fixing the problem but to no avail.

ok, I have worked out it is the pcv valve that I need as the one in my car has had 2 pipes snapped off, anyone think this was done diliberately to block off emmisions or something, becaue i find it odd that the pipes going to the pcv valve have been purposely blocked by inserting screws into them (one from the egr valve and god knows where the other one is coming from.).

Just wondering if anyone knows why anyone would do this. And if anyone knew anywhere in the uk I could get a new pcv valve from.

im sorry that the whole world didnt drop what they were doing to answer your question there Ghandi. leganzas arent the most common car on here, and there is no telling why your car was fucked up before you got it. and nice job posting pics so close you cant see what the hell every thing is.

To be fair, Daewoomofo's right. There's not a lot of people on her with leganzas. I certainly woulda helped if i had a clue what those pipes done. But i don't and I couldnt see much from the pictures.

Don't be so cheeky either. Being ignorant isnt the same as not knowing what's wrong or why things were done.

I've seen a few people do this with their leganzas, Mainly because they had a bad head gasket(causing oil to leak out the pcv valve) which in turn can cause your alternator to go out from the excess oil blowing on it, I advie checking your head gasket and then buying a new pcv valve.;)

haha were so ignorant but your the one looking for help... i have a leganza its 2.2L same year 99 but i cant really tell whats going on in your blurry close up shots...

if you have acess to a photo editing program could you please circle the parts that you are talking about? my cars in mechanics until tonight or tomorrow i find out at 3:30 pm PST, but when i get it ill look at mine to compare.
