Engine Removal????

Post by placilla »

EDIT: I bougth the car January of last year, so it last it a bit.

I have an 01' Leganza that I bougth, for a thousand dollar, in January of this year for my son to drive. It had a bottom end knock, but not bad. Little by little the knock was getting louder and last month the timing belt broke.

So, I'm going to pull the engine and put new pistons, rings, bearing, water pump, ETC. I'm also thinking of having the head port and polished while the valves are being replaced. What else would you recommend while I have the engine out? Any tricks to pulling the engine that I need to know off? I'm planing on removing it from the top without the trany.

It looks like a pretty straight up job, with lots of room to work. I just got done removing and replacing the engine on my 86' Celica and that bay is very tight, compare to the leganza.

My son graduates from high school this year and I am planning on giving him the car. I want to do it right, so it will last him a long time.

Thanks for your time,
Javier

Factory Service Manual has all the specs and easy to understand step by steps.
Try a dealer or e-bay or i believe (but don't know the link) you can download it in a pdf form.
Try a search in here for that or maybe a forum member that knows the link will read this and pass it on to you.

Also Search for Author "newtothewoo" A Daewootech forum member. He has posted a lot of Leganza engine removal stuff that would be very helpful to you.
Best of luck !

Removing it from the bottom with the tranny is way easier..... you will have a hell of a time separating the two.... especially if it's an automatic

The whole subframe comes out with just a few bolts ( subframe, engine, tranny )

With two of us I think it took no more than an hour perhaps two.... and a good portion of that was suspension removal.

Removal from bottom

Its going to be a little hard for me I don't have a lift. Only a jack, stands and an engine hoist.

yeah I did my last two by myself. Also you'll need a prybar to pry the engine from the transmission.

The difference being that both of you did engine removals on a Lanos right?

Tom and I did a Leganza a couple years back.... which is the car in question on this post

Engine hoist and jack stands are all you need... here is an example of one the the swaps we did not too long ago....

http://www.daewootech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9502

Do what every you want but I can tell you I've done dozens of engine removals and removing it all from the bottom is the easiest if you know what your doing... especially on the Leganza.

Now having said all that..... I'm going to confuse you and tell you that unless you have experience with disassembling suspension components your better off removing the engine from the top.

For a bottom removal you need to separate the ball joints, tie rods, sway bar links and calipers

You then need to pop out the drive axles which can be fun if you've never done it before.

Then you have to disconnect gearbox linkage and all the electrical connections.... most have to be done for the removal of the engine out the top anyways so it's not that much more work.

Sometimes to save time and effort I will pop off the lower control arm instead oftkaing off the ball joint..... and then I let the strut drop down.... then you can pop the axle out.

The good thing about taking apart the suspension is that you can look at everything and see if anything needs to be replaced while you have it apart.
