You can use electronic boost controllers which make use of the "top" port on external wastegates to keep the gate shut until a specified boost level. With internal gates they tend to crack open once there is a fair amount of exhaust pressure. Man that's awesome news because I was a little bit worried about the spool time on my T3/T04E.... I'm like you.... I want a consistant smooth build up of boost with lots of top end power.
That way you don't spend so much on gas..... you really have to lay into it in order to get the turbo to spool.... so it drives and gets the mileage similar to the regular N/A motor and when you floor it the power smoothly pushes you into the back of your seat.
Of course I want to run 18psi or more so I think that the T04E will suit the engine well.
Love to see a dyno plot between the two turbos..... it would be very interesting to compare them against expected "virtual" plots

T04B Dyno Video
I was trying to wait until I could get some outside flyby footage, but it just been too cold/wet/snowy/icey here lol.

I am not posting the final numbers yet as there is another piece to the setup which I'm hoping will get the ideal numbers I want. Even so, it did manage to make more HP with less boost.
I can however show you the difference in spool between the two turbos:
On this graph it shows full spool of the T04B by 4400 rpm, but on the streets, both turbos come in a bit sooner.

The two mounts at the bottom of the motor are filled, and I ended up filling the tranny mount at the same time as the turbo upgrade.kinkyllama wrote:Sweeet!

you could allways install an anti-lag system into it if you wanted..... basicly an anti-lag system will use various methods to spool up the turbine even at idle.
The primary method is Engine management based.... basicly the car will dump in more fuel and air than is needed through a secondary TB opening and then the management system runs a really retarded ignition ( like 40 deg )
Basicly hardly any of the air/fuel actually pushes on the piston... so the engine hardly moves... it sits there and idles.... most of the air/fuel mixture goes out the exhaust and burns in the manifold.... which in turn spools the turbo.
It's kind of like having a wide open throttle while running the engine at idle speed.
It's hard on the manifold.... and I would imagine it decreases the life of the turbo as well.
There are other methods such as injecting alchohol into a chamber attached to the manifold..... but they can be very dangerous (explode) and cause reversion (pressure in manifold may go up into the cylinder )

hey Chris..... yup I know about anti-lag systems, but I really don't need one. I like it just the way it is haha.

The only place it would be nice is in 1st gear.... a pound of two worth of boost down at lower RPM would definitly help the 0-60 times and it shouldn't make for wheel spin/hop if you have a set of decent summer tires.
Basicly you can have a switch to enable the ALS for the first gear..... so you only use it when your trying to race down a track.... it wouldn't be enable at any other time.

Yup, my shop has a turbo Integra GSR with full AEM standalone. He made a nice little switch near the handbrake for the anti-lag system..... it really helps off the line or when you need to do burnouts to heat up the tires, or when you just want to show off with turbo spooling sounds haha.PrecisionBoost wrote:

Altho with my transmission, I've haven't launched the car off the line for quite a long time...... gotta be nice and gentle with it lol. It is very tempting to try and see what kind of 0-100 or 0-160 speeds I can get (especially now that I have an in-car camera mount), but not worth the risk
Something to try when I get a F28 in there...

As I said I'm holding off on that until I have another piece to the puzzle.
