Boring 1.5 SOHC to 1.6

Post by MMamdouh »

just got this idea for the 1.5 SOHC... as long as stroaking is not an optione since the 1.6 got the same stroak i thought of boring it out and use the 1.6 pistons instead... the 1.5 is 76.5mm and the 1.6 is 79mm so i only need 2.5mm of extra bore

the question here is the strenth of the block... will it stand the boring job and hold on after taking off 2.5mm??

i can also use pistons from a 1.6 SOHC opel corsa and those has 10:1 compression ratio... will their be any issues as far as head clerance goes?

When we were getting the engine rebuilt we had the same idea.

Had the block all measured out but there wasnt going to be enough meat left between the cylinder walls after the boring.

Should not have problem. In fact I am planning to bore it to 80.0mm.
Becos X16XE (corsa 1.6 DOHC)and F16D3 (aveo 1.6 DOHC) have 79.0mm stock bore and 81.5mm stroke. Its the same engine block.

Does anyone have spare 1.6DOHC pistons and con rod (with bearing)? I need at least a set to set to a workshop in US to custom make piston and con rod.
I do not need 4 pairs, only need one pair. If anyone have spares, can pm me or email me at garylim@cyberway.com.sg, I am interested to buy from you.

I just bought a lanos crankshaft with 81.5mm stroke. Planning to put into my aveo and stroke it up to 1639cc with 80.00mm pistons.

Boring the block out from 79 to 81.5 definitly decreases the amount of material between the cylinder edges but I don't think it will be a problem strength wise.

I personally just dropped in a 1.6L SOHC block complete with lower end parts and just swapped most of the top end, oil pump and sensors.

One last thing you guys probably haven't considered is the nice new 1.8L small block.... which is basicly a 1.6L that has a longer stroke (80.5 bore x 88.2 stroke )

Stock it makes 140hp @6300 RPM..... so it's definitly a very nice setup.

Of course it has a variable valve timing setup and 10.5:1 comp pistons but both can be adapted for use in the 1.5L and 1.6L blocks.

If you put the 1.8L crankshaft onto the 1.5L block you'd probably end up somewhere in the 1.7L range making it a small bore long stroke engine.... which means it should be pretty efficent due to the long dwell time at TDC.

Is the 1.8 engine block the same as 1.5 except with longer stroke crankshaft?
If it fits, then I regretted getting this 1.6 crankshaft from Lanos.

Which engine does the 1.8 crankshaft came from?

If I change the crankshaft and core to 80.0mm, is there other things I need to change to adapt to the bigger displacement? Does it affect the electrical components such as the pumps or accessories u mentioned? Becos I only bought the crankshaft, not the whole engine middle block. I have an unichip installed to my engine for tuning the fuel. Is that enough? Can the unichip adjust the timing of the ignition?

I will need a higher lift camshafts also right? I am still looking. The SBD one looks good but its very ex abt $195 pounds for one. A pair will cost $390 pounds.

Does anyone have a 1.6 pistons and con rod (with bearing) for sale or can lend me? I need to send it to USA to custom make a set of forged con rod and pistons. Or can I just use those from X16XE engines and spare the trouble of custom making if they are the same?
