C20XE: Head and valve working, polishing and porting...

Post by mr_g »

I got another C20XE head, because current head on my engine cracked. I was running it cracked for 10 months now, and it is time to change it... Engine is overhating now all the time...

Head was disaster when I got it. Few days of work and here it is...

Then I left the head at the workshop to I don't know the right word for it in english... Damn... To make it straith, because it twists in time of usage... How do you call it? And also to change the valves...

After it's done, then I have polished new valves...

It's pretty easy, you need some tools and a few days of spare time....

I did some porting of the head and polishing. Also polishing the valves.

There is this guy in GB (migweb) that do this kind of heard work. He guaranties 15-22% of power gain with this work... He takes 300 + pounds for the job... I did myself...

that on Migweb is Gary, he has years porting heads, so i guess he knows every inch of a XE/LET head, no offense but on a high spec engine i prefer that he does the job for it rather than me.

But cool that you made it yourself. :)

Of course.. I don't doubt that he would do the job better, but it was tooo expansive for me to send it to GB and back and give 500+$ for the job.. This way, I did it myself, and if I get 10% gain I would be happy, knowing that I did this job myself... ;)

I just hope, that I would gain some power this way... Next on the to do list is custom inlet and outlet manifold...

I was thinking of making inlet manifold in carbon fiber, similar like yours...

The base would be stock inlet and then strait tubes in fiber and trumpets at the end.

Definitely did get something with head works.. I think I lower 0-60 time by 0.2-0.3s... It pulls strongly all the way from low rpm to redline...

But I still have some blue smoke getting out of exhaust pipe... :(

if you have blue smoke and you know the head is straight, you need rings.

did you ridge ream the tops of the cylinders when you installed the new rings? the ridges at the top if the cylinders were "broke in to" your old rings, if you left the ridge at the top your top ring would have hit it and it would be in pieces causing smoke.

There wasn't almost any ridge... The cylinders were very clean... I was surprised how good they look after 20 years and after who knows how many hundreds of thousands miles... Anyway it pulls hard. On yokohama A048 I could go as low as 6.2s 0-60mph time... This is great resault for 1150kg (2500lbs) heavy lanos...

I did some racing with Honda Civic Type R, and on start I gain some advantage, and Honda is catching me and line up with me at about 80mph..

And BTW, smoke is disappearing...
