valve cover gasket install

Post by azazel19 »

I have a 00 lanos hatchback with the 1.6L engine. The valve cover gasket is leaking oil in the front I have another gasket just don't know how to install it. I noticed there are 2 other gaskets on the driver side of the head that are shaped like D's not sure if they need to be changed or not they aren't leaking will they come out when I take the cover off or not. Also need torque specs and tightenting pattern.

If you want to DIY repairs ? You should also have your very own Factory Service Manual.
I paid about $50.00 for mine and it's worth every penny. Your lucky I am looking this up for you, not everyone would. ;)

First do this when your engine is cold.
1...Remove the hex bolts from the plastic cover.
2...Remove the oil cap and the plastic cover.
3...Remove the sparkplug wires, mark them so you can put them back in the right sequence.
4...Remove the valve cover bolts.
5...Remove the valve cover & old gasket
The two 'D' shape sealing plugs should be replaced and new ones should have been included in with your new gasket.
If you don't have new ones and dont want new ones? You could try cleaning the old ones and the head surfaces they fit in and use
pliable Permatex on them.
Permatex just the curve of the 'D' not the flat edge. You now can hope they don't leak.
6...Clean the sealing surfaces of the valve cover and camshaft housing.
7...Install the new valve cover gasket and the valve cover
8...Install the valve cover bolts.....89 inch pounds torque.
Start slowly bolt tightening from the center, zig-zag bolt tightening as you work towards the ends.
9...Install the plastic cover and oil cap
10...Get yourself a Factory Service Manual.

If you do all the above and take your time you won't have any oil leakage.
