Think its time for a new ECU??

Post by lanowoo »

2001 Lanos 112,735miles
1.6 DOHC

Today i was driving around town.. under normal driving conditions.. and the CEL came on...
and so i went and got a OBD2 reader.. and it read off at least 60 or so codes.....
so i decied to take it to the suzuki dealership since some of the codes it had it couldnt read for that they were specific codes thatwas solely for the dealership computer.. but before i did. i checked it again.. and it came up wiht all of these numbers... just random junk on the reader.. and that was the same for the dealerships reader... there was a lot of codes about misfiring.. and high input/output sensors and etc.. a big list... and the car runs with a slight miss at time...
Nothing else is really physcally present when it comes to driving it..
I have came to the conclusion.. that my ecu is heading for junkyard heaven.. what do you guys think??

Unless it got wet or something weird happened to the wires ?

I thought the ecu was good for a lot more than 112,735miles

I hope some one will have more info.

As I remember ? A lanos ecu costs around $600.00 (usd) on E-bay.
just my 2 cents worth but,.........
If I had your problem ? I would test and have tested, research and get lots of 'second opinions', talk to experienced long-time woo mechanics, etc, etc, etc. before I bought a new one.

p.s. If you do end up buying one ? I bet you could get a used one from someone you trusted and who knew it was working for a reasonable price.

Next week im going to take it to a trusted mechanic. and see what he thinks.. and Nick, i will keep you in mind. The auto one should work in the manual right.. but not the manual in the auto.. i think.

i'm not sure. i think you'll have a CEL the whole time if it does work b/c it won't be picking up the auto tranny. ask the mechanic or someone here will know.

if you put a auto ecu on a manual you wont be able to rev over 4k rpms. the ecu will think the cars in park all the time and it has a park rev limiter. Biosnianlanos tried swaping the ecus from his woos (one auto, one manual) and it didnt work

The codes for the high input low output thing sound a lot like the Cam Position Sensor codes when it is failing.

The misfire Cylinder 1 code sounds similar to the problem I have all the time with mine reporting a misfire on cylinder 1 when traveling at higher speed (60-75mph). One of these days I'm going to clean my Crankshaft Sensor and see if that is the problem (but I still haven't gotten to it).

Wish I could be more help on that.

Well i taken it to a mechanic.. and he said that he doesnt really know about the misfire.. his machine he had put a load on the engine.. and it shows no sign of malfunction.. but he did find that the #2 sparkplug is lightly splatterd with oil.. from my damn valve cover leak.. ..

He has tested almost all the sensors... and has came to no conclusions on that with the hi/low outputs..

so im still at square 1... but i have bought some new sparkplugs. Since they do have about 14k worth on them..

don't you have a close by woo buddy to lend you his/her ECU for testing?

i wouldn't jump into buying an ECU before making 100% it is the problem.

When my cam cover or valve cover whatever you want to call it had a leaky gasket...the oil dripping on the plug in cylinder three was causing a misfire. As soon as I replaced the gasket the misfire code never triggered again. Maybe the oil on the plug is the culprit...is the valve cover leaking into the spark plug?
