cryo freeze... the end of shattered flywheels & gear box
the end of shattered flywheels and gear boxes will be tested shortly.
i just sent my F16 internels off to be cryo frozen and nitrited. the flywheel, conecting rods and crank will be treated to the deep freeze also but no nitriting.
i plan to run no less than 400 wheel torque and i guarantee there will be no problems with gears blowing up.
lets hear some feedback.

damnit! If I had any idea it was that cheap I would have done it...but its too late for now

So are cryo treated parts as durable as forged? Reason being...it would be much cheaper to have the rods cryo treated than to buy forged ones. I hope to push between 250 and 300 hp out of a little 1.6 liter lanos, would cryo treated rods handle that? I'm definately going with forged pistons...but I was gonna have the crank cryo treated, knifed edged, and lightened so I'm guessing I should throw the rods in with the crank and then have the bottom end balanced.

not sure where cryotreated cast pasts stand to forged but i'd say pretty damn good seeing as it basically does the same thing molecularly as forging does mechanically and thats bringing the atoms closer.
that being said forged and billet rods would greatly benifit as well.
if you can, i would treat all the parts you can, block, crank, rods, pistons, head, cams, valves, BEARINGS, ect.

I was thinking more for my tranny...esp since it still seams its going to be the weakest link even though its an F28.gse_turbo wrote:sorry, is your motor built? unless it's back together then you can do it, it can be done any time, before or after mechining.
i'm only paying $230 for the crank, conrods, flywheel and (just added) the pistons, bearings and cams with that. the gear box will be done in a later load.

As for my motor the pistons/rods were limited at about 340bhp...if I do this treatment what do you think it can take?

with the i'm building i plan on no less than 400 wheel torque if not much more and i'll be testing on an F16 for somewhat set the bar for better trannys i think with the right rebuild and attention to details it will take it for atleast a good while.
noone has done this with our line of motors or trannys and writen about it so there's no telling for sure, just projections of what could happen and i'm confident.

Re: cryo freeze... the end of shattered flywheels & gear
No less than 400wtq? I really doubt the F16 will hold that even with all the treatments you could throw at it. Not to bash you or anything, but my prediction is that it will simply blow up in much the same way mine did. These treatments are good to increase the strength marginally, but you are talking about more than trippling the torque capacity of the transmission.... I really wouldn't count on itgse_turbo wrote:the end of shattered flywheels and gear boxes will be tested shortly.

between cryo and nitriting i'm confident in it lasting quite a while, atleast a couple runs down the quarter.
then again this is only a test and like i posted prior, it will set the bar for what can be expected out of treated F18's, F20's and F28's.
it's well documented what happens to an F16/D16 and at what point, so if the tranny can last even up to 300-350 wheel torque then its a successful test.

Well if its a test, thats cool and I'm all for it. Everything I do to my car is intended for daily driving, so it has to be somewhat reliable. It has to last longer than "a couple runs down the quarter" lol. But I would be very interested to know what these transmissions can take with the treatments you specified.gse_turbo wrote:between cryo and nitriting i'm confident in it lasting quite a while, atleast a couple runs down the quarter.
