damn lol........

altho I needed them quite urgently as there was no warning of the pad going. It went from a slight scraping noise to loud grind within 2 days, so I had to get it replaced ASAP.

Dead D20 tranny

Well I guess I found the limit of the D20 tranny. Happened pretty quickly and unexpected. Heard a strange noise when I shifted to 3rd, then crazy grinding and chattering when i shifted into 4th. Luckily I was somehow still able to limp the car to the shop, but the noise it was making was terrible.

This is what happens when you put 245 ft lbs of torque through the D20 for 2 months:

I've got a new (used) one on the way, should arrive tomorrow. But this means I have to turn down the boost and keep it under 200 ft lbs. I really didn't think these trannys were this weak, I was expecting the motor to go first. The new stickier tires (Toyo T1 R) probably was the last straw for the transmission, considering this happened less than a week after putting them on.

Yah I've been thinking about those lately, but it seems like there is alot of modification required to make it work. Like how do you make it work with the hydraulic clutch system in the Optra for example? And does anybody know really how much torque the F28 can take ?

Which very much looks like your factory hydraulic release system.. (in terms of bolt pattern). If I remember, I'll try to get the measurements off the only F28 in existence (so far) in north america tommorow.

sorry tom, but the lbs.ft rating has never been accurate.

from what ive heard if you take the numbers in the tranny name (ie 28 for the f28) and add a 0 to the end of it thats it tq rateing so the d16 can take 160 ft lbs, the d20 can take 200, the f28 can take 280 ect. not sure if thats accurate or correct but thats just what i heard.

kinky... i dont remember what ever came of it but chris was looking at a possible f40 swap.. from g6 gtp 3.9l.. and they stoped making the 3.9 litter last year.. 2006.. pick up brand new tranys for dirt cheap

im sure there is a mechine shop out there that can make a conversion plate for the bell housing if thats the problem

just for a heads up the pontiac F40 is different from the saab F40. the saab is the one that mounts directly but there is a question about geometry (output possition).

I didnt feel good enough dishing out about 2k for something that might work on paper. Plus I just needed a tranny to get my car going...once my cars on the road and the turbos on I'm gonna start looking into the f40. I put 30k miles on my car a year easy so it wont be too long before I need another one.

The F40 will require massive amounts of work to make it work..... none of the North america F40 transmissions will mount up.

Basicly the F40 that fits our iron block 2.0L is sold in europe/uk mated up to one of their diesel engines.

There are a number of Fiero guys that have modified the F40 to mate up to a high performance corvette V8 so that it can be used in the Fiero.

Needless to say I don't think anyone has broke one yet.

The biggest problem with the F40 is that the drive shafts are different.... so custom drive shafts are needed.... and there would be tons of fabrication in the way of mounts, linkage and other stuff like that.

So I would not suggest anyone go out and get an F40 yet.....odds are it could cost $5K just to get it to work with our engine.
