How hard is it to change the main bearings? What do i have to do?

sorry to have to tell you but you'll have to pull the motor.

if it's like the 2.0, and it should be, once it's out you'ld start with pulling the pan and oil pump.
you should be able to leave the flywheel on, them you pull the main caps.
it's likely that if you spun a bearing so you'll need to machine the crank and you'll have to order the bearings to the mechined specs.
once you get the crank back and the bearings you'll need to get a tool called " plastitape"or"plistictape." this is used to check the clearence between the bearings, caps and so on.
to use this you'll need to be able to install and uninstall the crank in the block several times. you will nedd to have a good torque wrench for this.

basically if you can't get someone who's done one before to help you then you should take it in to be done. it takes patients and experience.

also if you are going to the extent of rebuiling your bottom end the look into upgrades (arp studs, lighteded crank, bigger bore...)

it might be cheaper to find a salvaged motor.

would a 2.2 fit this tansmission? If it is going to be that hard i gust might upgrade.

yes. the mounts will be different.
you'll need to use the motor mounts for an 89 pontiac lemans 2.0 (GSE), i'm not sure if the lemans 1.6 metal bracket is the same. you'll need both the urithane/rubber and the metal bracket if you can find one.
if you can't find one locally just post a request and some one will have one for you.

Hey Zack,

I don't know anything about the smog laws in your state ?

You might want to check with your local smog shop first before you spend money on an engine that is not the same as the one that your car came with.
Here in California ? It's very hard to get a swapped engine passed the visual part of smog tests.
No pass=No registration tag.
Personaly? I vote for gse_turbo's suggestion of a salvaged engine.
One solved my problems for around $500.00 (no labor charge as I did the work myself)
