Sunbird Transmission

Post by Audacity Racing »

How far displaced are the sunbird's axles and mounts than that of the Daewoo transmissions? I have new information that suggests a 6-speed FWD swap provided you could get the axles to work.

What do you mean by "displaced" ?

Did you find something swapped into a Sunbird???

While you've been away I allready found a perfect 6 speed tranny capable of taking 400+ hp.... it's the Getrag F40

Right now it's an issue of finding the correct bellhousing as the F40 came to the USA in the Pontiac G6 (wrong bellhousing for sure) and the Saab 9-3 (still trying to get a good picture)

I bought a Saab manual and EPC.... and I'm about 90% sure the 2004 Saab 9-3 6spd will bolt right onto our block.

I have also verified that the F40 was used on our block in Europe as well as on the Y30DT (or was it Y30DH) turbo diesel engine (correct bellhousing.... have a picture )

Do some searching with me as the author and F40 as the search term.

They have allready been mating this F40 to Corvette V8 engines and then they drop them into Fieros..... and so far.... they work great.

It's too bad the G6 version is a totally different bellhousing.... I've found them from $800 to $1600 USD brand new!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Saab version is significantly more..... best pricing so far is about $2100 and the company that has it won't return my emails.

The axles on the F40 are way different than ours.... so it's a matter of getting custom axles made.... but for anyone running 400hp you would need new axles anyways.

IS the getrag from the early 90's not the same as the getrag in the woos???? I can't find the numbers (FXX) for the one in question, but if they are the same (should be considering the manufacturer), then the G6 does fit.

Good pics

It was a shot in the dark... but you maye jave beat me to it if it's not the right bellhousing.

After further reading we may be able to finally put the 6speed to rest. A few posts above the hand drawn jackshaft they mention teh Saab variant and how it's a little different, but it bolts up the same...

Those pics are of the G6 F40 with the tall bellhousing..... ours is slightly different in shape.....I've been researching this very heavily. ( about 150 hours now )

The 5speed Getrag 282 was standard in the Sunbird.... and the Getrag 283 was a nice upgrade ( from mid nineties )

I don't know of any older 6spd Getrag gearbox sold in the USA

In Europe they had the F16, F20, F28 bolted onto our engine..... the F28 was the prefered tranny of choice... it had to be converted from 4X4 to 2wd to work in the Astra.

I can't remember the number of splines on our axles.... think it's 32.... don't quote me..... so the G6 and Saab axles are very different.

I just wish I could find a perfect picture of a 2004 Saab 6spd.... the EPC shows one tranny picture for the 5spd and 6spd.... and that picture has the identical mounts to that of our F16/D16/F20/D20

I'm sure the Saab F40 is the right one.... but I don't want to order one unless I can get a confirmation picture..... and so far nobody is willing to do that.

I even found a nice used Saab 6spd in Washington (fairly close to me) but the guy won't take a picture for me..... it's $900.... so I'm tempted to buy it anyways.

The guy doesn't seem willing to Ship it to Canada either.... so I might have to make a trip down there and pick it up.... my uncle lives about 20minutes from the Wrecker shop.... so I could stay there overnight if I wanted.

I've tried all over the place..... Saab forums.... EBay.... you name it.... I've tried it.

There are billions of pictures of 5spd and Auto Saab transmissions.... which have our bellhousing pattern.... but I still can't find one for the 6spd.

I haven't tried Ebay lately..... I even have a guy down in Eastern Canada looking out for one for me.... he seems like a decent guy... but he said the 6spd transmissions are rare and sell very quickly.

Anyways......... I have to work tommorow so I best head to bed.

Anything you find..... send it my way...

I know this is kind of old but anything new on this?

I'm convinced the F40 will work, you said the 5spd and auto trannsmissions from the SAABs are the same as our block and the SAAB transmissions you have seen all mount up and the 6spd mounts up to that same motor as teh SAAB transmissions you've seen so it has to be the same.
I hope that made sence, its hard to explain.

We're still very unsure... both the new Astra guys and the Fiero guys say it bolts up to their application. I can only assume that this means the bellhousing has been converted to the newer "high feature" engine models.

HOWEVER

The new Astra guys also say that the f28 will bolt to their application, or you can buy the Quaife 6-speed kit for the standard Daewoo transmissions.

This merely adds more confusion to the pile :o

The current F40's over here bolt up to the Aluminum Ecotec engines..... the F28 bolts up to the Iron Ecotec engines which are still in use in some of the new turbo Vauxhall/Opel models.

They did get an F40 with a belhousing compatible with the iron block..... it's just that it happens to be mated to a 3.0L Diesel that didn't make it over to North America.
