Yeah you're right,its not misfiring at all. It all sounds smooth as it did before,just with the extra tapping noise and reduced power. I did notice a slight increase in fuel consumption too,but only slight.Audacity Racing wrote:That sealed the deal....
You have a valvetrain issue... it's time to open the head... if none of the lifters look messed up, then it's time to pull the head and see about a damaged valve surface. It's clear based on lack of power that you are loosing fuel out one of the valves or the cylinder isn't firing right... but it's not misfiring.

Just had a guy come look at this,and he said it is a knocking rod,and that I need a new engine. Obviously thats the worst case scenario,and I would have liked to avoid that,but I don't know if he is bullshitting me or not. He said he's going to get some prices of rebuilt engines with a decent warranty. his labor for replacing it would be $550 plus engine cost,which will probably run about $600-800 roughly. Dunno guys,what do you think ? I don't know if its worth it for me,maybe i should junk it off cheap and get something else.
I think I will get someone else to look at it,get a second opinion. But then anyone could just tell me i need a new engine.

And a third, forth,...opinion can't possiably hurt.
These engines are built tight.
But !
We don't know your engines history.
Like, how many miles are on it ? Or, how has it has been driven/maintained ? Or, if it was ever run with little (or no) oil?
Or, it it's over-heated big time at one time ? We don't know.
But !
We do know that generaly, regarding engine wear and longlividly?

I just went through this very dilemma. I thought long and hard about fixing the current engine (165,000 miles). It ran great, no smoke, lots of power. But after talking to many auto guys I was convinced to replace the engine.
A student at the tech center where I work (teach graphic design). A student in autoshop class had a chevy or some sort that broke a timing belt also. He had $700 or so into his rebuild. They put it all together, started and it ran great about 10 miles from school until a rod busted out of the block. So he is having to start all over.
With this info, the high miles, and cost of repair vs. replace- I elected to swap it. By the way, I found an engine with only 27,000 for $950. $200 or so to ship, $80 for belt and pulleys, plus new fluids. I did the work all myself. Only wanted to quit once (thanks for the vote of confidence Spider) and am very pleased with the results.
My next project is a head gasket or engine replace on a BMW 528i. Engine has 250,000+ miles- so I am leaning towards replacing it too.

You have a few choices depending on how much your willing to spend.
If you do the work yourself you can save all the labor charges
If you buy a rebuilt engine from rebuilder be sure they have a good warrenty and a good reputation.
My guess would be between $1,500~$2,000 (U.S.D) Others in here can probably give you more figures.
I see your in the Las Vegas area ?
Try a google search of local wrecking/salvage yards in your area ? Make some phone calls ?
You may be able to find a good used engine out of a crashed car.
Thats what mine was.
It has 85K miles on it. It's from a wrecked (rear end damaged) Lanos.
The engine was out of the car and the starter,alternator, a/c compressor and transmission had been removed. I turned it over by hand and it had good compression. Everything looked ok. So, I bought it for $300.00
I took the guys word on it that it was good. He has a good reputation. Thats the chance you take with a used engine. Your in las Vegas, you know about taking chances, right ?
He loaded it on my little trailer and away I went.
Like newtothe woo ? I am doing my own work.. Belts and installation. Only he is a lot faster than I am.
He's finished, I am only half-way done.
Which ever way you go ? Remember that shipping is gonna cost you also.
So, the closer to home the better.

Yeah the guy is going to get back to me with prices etc. i may even be doing some work for him on his house in exchange for his labour charges,so I may end up paying for the engine and hardly anything for labour. I'll see what happens once he gets me the prices and stuff. Turned out it was the rod knock problem. I had someone else look at it without telling him what the other person had said. He drained the oil and took off the oilpan and you could actually move the dud part with your fingers,it was all wobbly, there was way too much play in it. He said I was lucky that I had driven it as much as I have while it was like this and not bust through the oilpan and spill out all the oil while driving along.
Anyway,long story short,got a used 2000 Lanos engine locally with 34000 miles for 500 bucks and a 90 day warranty. Hopefully that will give me enough time to put a couple thousand miles on it and see how it runs.

If I were you ?
I would also get a new water pump. Not all that much work while your doing the TB etc.
That way all your (timing belt related) new stuff will start at 'Zero' miles.
p.s. How many miles were on your old engine ?
