When the timing belt breaks ... Updated !
... will the car still run? Or will it just sit there revving like it was in Neutral even when it's in Drive ?
99 Lanos BTW.
If it still runs, what are some symptoms of broken TB ?
thanks

OK, mine still runs,so hopefully I can assume its not the TB. Rattling noise coming from the engine, dosent really affect preformance too much, although it is affected slightly.Audacity Racing wrote:Broken timing belt is fatal. The engine will not run, at all. No questions, no exceptions, if the timing belt broke, the engine is out of commission.
I was driving it a bit too hard one day I think, then the next day this noise started. Sound like its coming from inside at the top of the engine, rather than right down inside. Valves maybe ? Thats why I asked the question about the TB first off. The rattling speed matches the rev speed.

Yeah I thought of that one, checked them and they all seem good. The noise seems to be coming from the rear top of the engine, opposite where the third spark plug from the left is. It's hard to tell exactly, but thats as close as I can tell just by listening up close.kinkyllama wrote:Maybe a loose spark plug?
Maybe the timing is just badly off?

What do you mean by this part of your question, naznomad ?naznomad wrote:... Or will it just sit there revving like it was in Neutral even when it's in Drive ?

Re: When the timing belt breaks ...
What I meant by it was that if you put your car in Neutral(N),and rev the engine,it just sits there without going anywhere. I was asking if that is the same effect that happens with the car in Drive(D) when the timing belt goes kaput. Doesn't really matter now,Audacity Racing answered that bit for me further up the thread, that the car would not move if it had broken, whereas my car still drives ! (Albeit noisily:)Spider wrote:What do you mean by this part of your question, naznomad ?naznomad wrote:... Or will it just sit there revving like it was in Neutral even when it's in Drive ?

Yeah thats what I took from AR's reply, that it wouldnt run,I was trying to prove or disprove that the timing belt had gone, that was the only reason i asked the first question.
About the tranny(its auto by the way) if it was shot would it not work? It shifts fine just as it always has. The noise problem i have comes from the top of the engine, not way down below. Hard to describe in words, if you could see and hear it it probably would make more sense than my description alone !

I would have thought it would happen gradually though, not suddenly. Or maybe not. If it is valves,i guess there's no way to tell how many are affected without opening it up. Better get ready to spend some moolah.lanowoo wrote:They are worn and are supposed to be loosend and torqued to the specific rating .. cause like everything else they wear and move..

Got a couple video clips, not sure what you'll be able to tell from it,but here are 2 links :daewoomofo wrote:if you have a digi cam that has sound you can make a short video of your car running so we can all hear what it sounds like, that way we can hear the noise adn better diagnose your problem.
