Lanos rear drums
i got some 95k kms on my lanos now and i am still on OEM rear drums and pads, i am starting to have brake issues due to rear brakes adjustment and i need some advice.
the 95k kms has taken its toll on the rear drums and now it is a bit worn and their is kinda a lip at the edge of the inner side of the drum due to the friction of the pads on the drum through the 95k kms.
now i can't calibrate the rear brakes correctly as the lip will force me to do the calibration a bit off so that i can put back the drum in place without beeing stuck... that results in a bit of travel in the brakes pedal till the brakes actually kick in and the hand brake is not as good as it used to be.
i am thinking of machining the drums to make its inner surface flat and be able to do the correct adjustment without having to compromise that for the sake of installation... now my question is: is maching the drums a good idea??
the way i see it is that the rear drums are not on so much load or even heat up that much that its thickness is that substantial in its operation so i guess machining will be OK... that also will save me 250 LE (43.85USD) that i can spent on upgrading the front rotors for better overall braking performance.
so guys... is the drum machining a good idea?? i just need to surface that damn lip that messes up the calibration.

i wish i can but their is non of those out their at the OPEL guys here so... it is a very bumpy road to go through and will take lost of time to find the parts and the way things are going it is going to cost an arm and a leg too.gse_turbo wrote:just do the disc conversion.

i was referring to FRONT brake upgrade not rear... i am planning to but the bigger rotors and calipers from the 1.6 Nubira on my 1.5 lanos, a friend of mine did it and he gave very solid feedback on the job so i got my mind set on doing that, the thing is: i don't wanna spend lots of money on the rear when the front should be the one looked after.
again my question still stands: is it a good idea to machine the rear drums? is their any safty or performance issues if i did that??

there is no problem mechining drums, any worth wild brake shop can do it and they should have the specs on hand or atleast available.
the only footwork you should be doing on this is finding a shop to turn them for you if you want to do the work or a shop you trustto do the work for you.

the one setup work for all of the and more (i.e the Belmont & Manta and others still).

better still, opel is sold in Egypt, use the set from a Corsa or Vectra, they will bolt right on. in the states we should be so lucky.
if theres still an issue of mounting a caliper which there shouldn't be, let me know and i'll write the for you to take to a mechine shop to be cut.
not say these guys know more or less then that their owner's manual tells them but here are the top four Opels in Egypt, acctually the only four in Egypt. they may be some help.

indeed the parts are available at the OPEl guys but those guys are SOBs... one guy wanted to sell us the whole rear beam of an OPEL vectra for a 1000LE (176USD) and that is even more of a full 1.6 DOHC front brakes conversion for my1.5 SOHC lanos so i am not going that road.
morover the nubira front brakes swap - similar to the 1.6 DOHC swap - will cost some 350LE only (61.40USD) so i don't see why i should spend triple that much to upgrad the rear while keeping my tiny front rotors on.
i an still fond of the rear discs swap though but not for that much money... if i do find the parts as cheap as i want then i will go for it but untill then the swap is out of my plans due to the insane cost.
i already got the nubira front rotors from a friend and i just need the calipers to finish up the swap and as far as the rear is concerned, i am going to get the drums machined to be able to get the correct calibration on them and minimize the brake's pedal "free play" that i got.
anyone knows if the leganza brake booster is swappable with the lanos??

dont know why youre so scared about it.
i have a lemans wich from factory had the same brake setup as you.
and im using 256mm rotors and calipers on the front (Astra 16v, Nubira ones, Espero 2.0, etc)
and i have no problems with the brakes.

i am not scared... it is just the current cost of rear disc conversion vs. front brakes upgrade is what concerns me now.
i can do the front upgrade for 1/3 the price of rear disc conversion for the time beeing so i am going to go with the front upgrade for now.
if i did find a good price for the rear conversion parts i will do it for sure, will keep you all posted with what i do.
will upgrading the booster make brakes improvment or will it be a waste of money?? i can only see that the difference in brakes system of the 1.6 and 2.0 nubira is the booster so i rcon it does have an improvment to offer... what do you think? also will the leganza booster fit a lanos?
