Fog light switch

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at installing some footwell neons in my Daewoo Lanos. On the right hand side of the clock in the car is a fog-light switch/button, but my Lanos doesn't have fog lights - so the switch isn't doing anything when I push it in.

I removed some of the dash to see if the switch was even connected, and hoorah - it is! Since this switch isn't being used for anything I thought why not use it for the neons - it'll make an easy way to turn them on and off and won't require any installation of a new switch.

I've pulled out the connector from the back of the fog light switch, and the wires are as follows. (The below picture is the actual connector jack):

I'm guessing that the GREEN wire is for power.. but I'm not 100% sure what all the other ones are. There is a LED (or globe of some sort) on the actual button, which I'm guessing is supposed to light up when the fog lights are turned on (aka when the circuit is completed??).

When I've figured out what all the wires are for I'll be doing a HOW-TO post on how to install footwell neons into a Lanos - I can't find much in the way of how-to on this subject on Daewootech!

Ok, so after some time and a handy multimeter, I've got it figured out.

But before I get into how I did it - is the fog light button supposed to click in, like the hazard lights do? Mine doesn't click in (and the light inside the button never comes on - the backlight does..), and therefore I can't get my neon to stay on unless I hold the button in. Perhaps I need to pick one up from a wreckers somewhere..?

Anyway, the following guide is under the impression that you've moved the stereo, and air con out of the way, and have unplugged the connector at the back of the fog light button.

I bought a cigarette lighter neon from my local Repco (Australia/New Zealand), was about $15. Chopped the wire about 5cm from the cigarette lighter connector (never know when it might come in handy again!), and then split the two wires. One is black, one is black with a white strip.

I mounted the neon in the footwell on the drivers side, took a bit of fiddling around but eventually got it secure. Once you've got it in place, pull the wires through to the dash on the left hand side (my Daewoo is a right-hand drive, this would be left side if yours if left hand drive).

Lift up the small tab inside the fog light connector for the brown wire with the white stripe, and pull the single wire out. Do the same to the brown wire above the green one. I then wound the black wire with the white strip to the brown wire with the white strip, just around the top of the connector. I'll probably solder this later. Attach the black wire to the brown wire. Insert your new double wires back into the fog light connector, and re-attach the connector to the button.

Turn on your headlights, then push the fog light button in. The neon *should* come on. If not, you've got a loose wire somewhere, it may have come off when you pushed the two wires back into the connector. The neon will only come on if you have your headlights on. To get around this you can splice the power wire from your cigarette lighter (or any other source that has constant power when in ACC or ON), cut the green wire on the fog light connector and attach the two. Be sure to seal off the green wire that is coming from the steering wheel direction that you are no longer using -- you don't want a short!

Just so you know my UK Lanos has rear foglights (you have to have them by law) and they're the same light clusters as elsewhere so I guess you have them too. I don't have front foglights, but the switch still turns on the rear foglights with stock wiring.. they only come on though when you have the headlights on full, there's a light that comes on by your dials.

It's the white light in the right

I thought they were standard in the clusters??

They are just part of the rear clusters, the newer Lanos has it only one on side, and the reverse light the other side.
The switch in the dash controls them (all stock wiring, I haven't done anything).

No it's the Red light on the left cluster. The White on the right is reverse light. (Newer Lanos)

ok so you have to turn on your reverse lights, i got ya now. i thought you had a set of lights aded on to the taillights. ok then thanks.

I don't have rear fog lights, there's little/no need for them in Australia :P

They have nothing to do with the reverse lights.

The old Lanos has a red light either side in the rear cluster which comes on by the foglight switch in dash, but only comes on when you have your headlights on.

The new Lanos has only one red rear foglight on the left cluster, and it has only one reverse light on the right cluster.
