Fuel pump issue, I think

Post by kinkyllama »

Well recently it's been really cold, and I thought my injectors were just maxing out cuz the sound was similiar to when my fuel mixture got to rich. It sounds like I'm hitting a rev limiter only 3x-4x faster and a bit more smooth pulsing. It happened in 2nd around 6300rpms sometimes and what seamed like on only the coldest of nights. I dunno if it would have happened in any other gear I only go that high in 2nd cuz I wanna hit like 58mph and it isnt worth shifting to third for that. But last night I was doing 120-132mph for about 7 miles and not even a 1/4 after slowing down and getting off the freeway my car just died. Finally it did start and was running normal for awhile. It had been off a couple times and ran another 15miles at normal speeds and throttle and I was just waiting infront of my friends house and it just died. I realized the fuel pump wasn't turning on when I turned the key half way like it usually does. Sometimes it'd start to start even though I didnt hear the fuel pump turn out (it could have turned on late while I was cranking it, I wouldn't have heard). After about 5 mins it finally started again.

What can I look for to fix this? Boshart motorsports installed a walbro fuel pump about 20k miles ago. They're pretty busy otherwise I'd go to them first but I need to sort this out asap. I can't call my dad at 3am anymore cuz I have horrible luck with flat tires on my car and engine dying in my parents cars (of course, when the flats getting fixed on mine).

Thanks for any help
Danny

I would give a try with fuel additive able to absorb water in tank.

i should say the change the pump.

some walbros have a bad habbit of dying sooner than expected. btw dont run the walbro with very low gas in the tank.

Nope.

Why not have the gas low? cuz it heats up?

The very first time it did it at the top of 2nd or when it totally cut out?

When it totally cut out I had at the very least just under a 1/4 and up to 1/2tank...it did it while I was going in a straight line.

Some of the times it just sorta cut out in the top of 2nd its hard to say since I fill up my tank about 3 times a week right now. I try not to run my tank really low cuz I know it's bad for the pump.

I had the same problem but my pump finally took a dump and left me stranded. I would
change pump and filter and that should fix it!!

Now I gotta wounder if it was ever the fuel pump. My car started having voltage problems, the stereo would turn on and off and a couple times it got so bad the headlights wouldnt light up the road enough for me to drive. I looked at the battery and the power wire for the MSD DIS-2 was all melted and crusty. I redid it and the car still wouldnt work. I messed with all the wires and everything but the battery still had plently of juice. After messing with it for along time my battery finaly died...well I picked up another yellow top cuz my last one had died and I was using a spare battery... bam it worked! and the car runs even stronger now.

Is it possible this was my fuel pump like issue? cuz my pump hasnt done anything since.

Also what I dont understand is the spare battery still had plently of juice when I fixed the MSDs power wire but it wouldn't start anyways untill I replaced the battery. Whats with that?

I hope nothing goes wrong, I have my first track day in like 4+ months this weekend.

It almost seems this might be some sort of wiring problem, short possibly. Check all the power connections that were made, and even feel with you hand. First sign of problem would be warm wires.

oh! something just came to mind that I'm not sure if it is normal. But it has been like this since the msd has been installed. Something I touch, I think the coil (whatever the wires plug into, not the plugs end though) shocks the hell out of me sometimes when the car is running. It's happened twice, once while I was in the rain I slipped and touched something and got shocked all to hell.

Also before this I had an optimal yellow top battery die on me out of nowhere and it won't hold any charge, but a few people are trying to tell me this happens allot with dry cells and they actually get more returns on them then anything else.

Anyways I'll check all the wires. I finally got my new yellow top, upgraded all the grounds again but better, and found all the perfect fitmits so I feel good about that.
