Orange peel is what the painted surface resembles when the paint spray gun is held too far away from the surface of the object being painted. The paint particles have enough time to begin to dry before they stick to the surface being painted. This results in the painted surface not looking smooth, but resembling the slightly bumpy texture of the surface of an orange.
-Hold the paint gun too close and you get runs.
--Hold the paint gun too far away and you get orange peel.
---Hold it just right and the paint goes on smoothly.
