fuel gauge & air intake?

here's the story,
one of my friends recently bought a opel/vauxhall corsa 'B' (for those who don't know, it's the same as what sim0ng has) and he fitted a new cone air filter to it. all good, removed the stock air filter... evrything fits... it sounds good... etc etc...

one problem,
everytime he puts his foot to the floor the fuel gauge goes down, right down into empty/red. as soon as he lifts his foot up again it is restored to the actual fuel level. i dont see any reason why this should happen, its only an air filter...
we were both very confused as to why its happening.
anyone got any ideas? any help would be great.

Do you mean flooring gas pedal or just putting shoes on the floor?
If second case you could have a short in the wiring.

"flooring" wouldn't cause that at all so i recon it is "foot on the floor" symptom and in this case a lose wiring is the most probable cause as Daniel suggested.

by putting ur foot to the floor i mean flooring it! as in full throttle. throttle body fully open, accelerator pedal all the way down. how else can it be said?!
and as far as i know there is probably no wiring running underneather the carpet (as they are usually tucked into corners)
but the p[roblem has been figured out, the "damper" that holds the fuel gauge in place is simply weak, or old.
and the main reason that seems to be causing this is the effect the new air filter has on the engine... it somehow gives it quite a bit of extra kick. as the car is more powerful and responsive. and the acceleration throws the fuel around alot or somethign like he explained and the gauge doesnt register it immediately. if that makes sense.
