Oil leak near head gaskett???

Post by da_woo »

Hey Guys

i have oil leaking from the front of my engine down near the head gasket so i thought i would go get a quote to get the head shaved and new head gasket. I went to 3 mechenics, 2 told me it would roughly cost between $600 - 800 to shave the head, and replace the gasket , thermostate, o2 sensor, head bolts, coolant and to fully clean the engine down. The 3rd mechenic said they can tighten the head and this stops the leak 9/10 times???

any ideas guys what i should do??

has anyone ever got there head tightened? did it work and how much was the cost? The guy wants to charge $120...

Regards

PS:All prices are quoted in Aus dollars

well... i have just been in this setuation, start with tightening the head first as that stopped the leak for me however i went on and replaced the gasket anyways 'cause i am skeptical (spelling) but the head gasket that i took of was in an excelent condition so don't just jump into big head gasket job till you tighten the head bolts first.

if the head gasket turned to be faulty then go ahead and replace it, you don't need to shave the head at all... this is only done if the engine overheated and the head was wrapped... at least don't do it untill you are absolutly sure it is wrapped.

is it just me or didn't i reply to that before?... if you got a ton of money that you want to waste then go ahead and do everything you were told to do, even better buy a new engine and call it a day.
