i was checking this new tranny at www.howstuffworks.com and i got how the thing works... only problem is how does it go into reverse??
the two pullies are in contact all times using the belt so how will the reotational force go the other way arround?
also how can this thing go into Neutral or Park with the continous linkage applied all time??

As experiance with my mom's scooter tells me... CVT's don't do reverse... or nuetral... Now i do know they're putting them in cars now... So that out of no where confused me, because i don't understand it either... if i try to walk the scooter back it doesn't like it, it's always pushing the bike forward... And i'm pushing against the engine when i push backwards... it also doesn't like being stopped... so to tell you the truth i'd like to know the answer too
a woo that is a work in progress
anyone??

I'm not sure.... I've never looked at a CVT internal diagram.
So... again... just guessing... but the CVT gear most likely has a shaft coming out of the middle and if your in forward the shaft mates up with one set of gears and if you go into reverse it slides the forward gears over and mates up to the reverse gears.
Look up how a regular manual transmission engages reverse and it will give you a good idea as to how it works in a CVT.... they probably are not all that different.

well... CVT is not using any gears whatsoever and that what made me confused about the reverse bit but i think the only way to a "reverse" setuation will be through gears.
still not sure about "in gear idle" setuation as well... shouldn't their be a clutch or so? how does standard issue auto tranny handle in gear idle?
