Blew my subs or amp or somethin

Post by kinkyllama »

Anyways I was showing off turning up the bass real loud when all of a sudden it stopped working and you sure could smell something went out. I got home about 20 mins later and turned it back on, it seamed to work perfectly but I didnt turn it up all the way. Now this morning I went out there and with the bass and vol turned up full blast its barley noticable. The subs are moving but very very litte. Every lights up, there is no protection lights or anything on.

What do you guys think? I have a hifonics amp powering 2 12" kicker subs at 750rpms @ 1ohm each. Which should be perfect for the subs.

hhhmmm..... interesting. and both subs are still working? only thing i can think is that maybe you blew the subs but not completely. when you turn the car on does the protect light come on to show that it work then goes out? if anything i'm wondering if you blew something in the amp itself that cut the power in half. i think your best bet would be to take it to a audio shop, if no one can think of anything else. hopefully one that will not charge you to look at it unless they can find the source of the problem.

Yes both are still working.

The protection light comes on for a split second. Plus there is also the power light lit and on my remote knob a blue light lit to let me know its working. I remember when I had bad RCAs the power light would stay on the amp but the blue light wouldnt come on the remote.

yeah i'm stumped then. if i was you i would disconnect everything like:, amp, subs, and all wires to the deck and then reconnect them all. who knows maybe it'll correct itself that way. or just take it to a shop.

use an ohm meter to check the impediance of the subs. if its higher than normal (prolly 2 or 4 ohms) its partially blown

Are those cheap? I guess I could just ask a shop to do it real quick.

Another update.. today I got in the car which had been running awhile and all of a sudden the subs were working fine... then they stopped again. So somethings fishy.

Do you have a friend with an amp in his car that you can connect your subs to?
And do they have subs that can be connected to your amp?

If you find that a good pair of subs work fine on your amp, but your speakers work imporperly on their amp, then you know it is your subs.
Also, if you find their subs work funny on your amp, then you know it is your amp.

As for a volt/ohm multi-meter, they are usually on sale for aroun $3 to $6 at Harbor Freight.

eh, None that have the time right now. I have extra subs and amp but last time I hooked them up I dont think they worked either just from sitting so long. I need to go to best buy in the next couples days cuz they didnt finish a job so I'll have them check with the meters real quick.

Thanks guys, I'll let you know soon
