I can offer some suggestions.
First off get the right stuff to tint, since spray tint usually needs a clear coat over it to make it last, get some good wuality clear, with a UV protectant. First step is to lightly sand down the surface of your taillights with a wetsandpaper at like 1200 grit or more. This will give the tint something to grip.
Apply even overlapping coats, and make sure you don't get any heavy/dark spots. Also, its a good idea to paint both lights at the same time so the amount of tint on each matches.
After you find the darkness level you like let it completely dry, then apply a coat or two of clear to seal it and add back the gloss.
Good look on that.

When I used tint it didnt turn out so well. I cleared the surface very very well and it spotted up all over the lens like there was something on the surface.
