it is a resonator, other people teel me they have removed it, others tell me to keep it on beause of the deep awesome tone it can produce, with a high perf flow exaust muffler at the end of car.
it dulls the excess engine noise,
prob. make it sound bad.

Keep the resonator. With the straight thru hotdog style ones you can get these days the flow restriction is going to be minimal and you'll get a much smoother exhaust note.
I've heard some without a resonator and they sound very raspy in the midrange.
Its very much a personal choice these days... differences are going to be minimal if any?
Now here is a term waved around by many a so called exhaust expert. You car needs back pressure.
Well acording to one of the most respected and published motoring genius' of our time, David Vizard, any car that produces more power with a sytem with more back pressure, has a fundamental problem with the motor.
What you need is positive back pressure, ie to big an exhaust will cause the gases to "float" about in the pipe, where as a system the right size will actually have a syphoning effect.
Maniflow in the UK do a system called the reverse cone megaphone that does exactly this.
Just a piece of info, use it, don't

If you have work done on your exhaust dont keep the stock muffler or resonator. If you want a resonator then put a hi-flow one in. It wont really hurt performance but will quiet down the exhuast a good amount.
the thing in the pic is the muffler isnt it? It looks like the factory muffler with a small resonator built in to it and a resonator further down near the tip. From what i understand is that a muffler is a hollow body with baffles in it (in various configurations) and a resonator is just a hollow body.
