Tire noise or bearing noise

Post by iusa1 »

Hello,

My 4 door 1999 Lanos has abnormally loud tire noise at speeds ranging from 35 to 50 MPH. Above and below this speed range the noise is not admornal. The tires appear fine with 70% or more tread life on them with no real cupping or other bad surface problems. My fear is that this is not tire noise but a bad wheel bearing. Since the noise seems to be coming from the passenger side front I raised the car and turned the front wheels (with the auto trans in neutral and both front wheels rasied) which seem to move with just a little resistance. I did this to the back wheels also and I must say there was less resistance with the rear wheels but both front wheels seemed to have the same light resitance to the. In the past 5 days I have driven over 1200 miles and the noise has not changed. The car has one odd tire (I just bought this car and this is these are the tires that came with it), it has three BCT JA55 185/60R14 tires on the right front and two rear wheels, and one National 185/60R14 on the left front. Can someone comment on the tire size being correct or not. I mention this since during my 1200 mile trip I went through several construction sites where the speed is automatically measured and displayed for you as a method of having drivers slow down. My speed was 3-5 miles higher (per hour) than the speed dsiplayed on the monitoring system. My other cars are usally spot on or very close to these displays. I also find myself being amoung the slower drivers on roads I have drivern for years.

Any help you can give me would be great. Thank you Mohamed Mamdouh for helping me properly register to this forum.

1- your tire size is correct as long as you have the 1.6 DOHC engine.
2- it is not advisable to have different tire types on the sides.
3- the front wheels will feel heavier than the rear ones indeed when you spin them as the resistance of the CV joints will add extra weight thus requiring extra effort.
4- try the free spin terst once more on all wheels but this time spin the wheel really fast then put your ear against the fender, if you could hear grinding sound through the fender then your bearings are bad.

i bought my car for $6000. it ahd 10947 miles on it when i got it. it came with a 3 year 36000 mile bumper to bumper warranty from the day i bought it. they had to replace the transmission (it had too much fluid in it [when i got it] and the clutch bands got fryed), wheel bearing and the heater controle cables. so i figure the warranty was worth it

I'm still trying to figure out what my humming noise is...

it only occurs from 40-60mph...

I put one of my other wheels on and there was no change.

Already replaced the bearings...

Gonna check the brakes again to see if they're hung up or something...

Anyone know if it's possible to bend a rear axle slightly?

i would say it is very possible since you can bend a whole chassis with just going in a hole going pretty fast.

What is the problem with the rear axle.

I had gotten my lanos in 2002, 3,550 dollars, 24,000 miles, 5 year/ 100,000 miles powertrain warranty. bought new but repoed the next week from other person. They said since it wasn't 3 months, they would treat it like new. no real troubles and routine maintenace kept up. just need to make sure engine is kept tip top shape.

maybe the fender weild is touching the tire around 40-60 mph. is cv jonts ok, transmission been flushed and no trash or bent gears between 3-5 etc. clutch / torque converter good flywheel not bent or missing teeth.

oh-kay
i have no idea, anyhting to do with the back wheels are always a blur to me. could your handbrake be a little loose, or can it vibrate itself enough to catch on the first cilck in the brake.

i bent my rear left axel when i spun out of control last novenber... the car was humming as hell at 120 Km/h and the wheel got very hot and spit all the grease out... this is due to the fact that the axel was straning the bearings and caisng them to overheat.

if an axel is bet it will cause a whine for sure... you can easly detect that at an alighnment job.

I believe to have similar problem as your and it is not solve yet. My five door 2000 manual 1.6 dohc lanos SX has abnormally tire or bearing noise at speeds after around 65 km/h.

I switch off the aircon, radio and put my gear into neutral when the noise appear, i was not able to determine where the noise come from. Apart from the noise i didn't notice any degrade in performance and stability.

guy just for your info I changed to denso iridium IK20 spark plugs one day before i had the noise problem. I believe the noise not cause by the spark plug as i put my gear to neutral when the noise appear and the noise still there as clear.

I'm going to deflate all my types abit and see what happen next.

Any help you can give me would be great

finally i found the source to my problem. One of my rear wheel bearing is causing the noise. Now i can hear the noise above 40km/h , before is above 60km/h. At first i thought my front tires is producing the noise though they are only 30% wear out. So I spend 180 bucks on two new front tires, now my wallet feel hurts  . The mechcanic helped me confirm the source of the noise by spinning my rear wheel.
...sign...i'm going to squeeze out some more bucks from my wallet to remedy the problem. :(
