Replacing Cam Sensor and 02 sensor

Post by naznomad »

Found out these need replacing . I have to get the car smogged before i can re-register it and it wont pass otherwise.
(Although i had heard there is a way to make it pass)
Also, timing belt needs replacing. You dont even know how much the guy wanted to do these. No way Jose i said, cant afford it,plain and simple. Some of us are not made of money I also don't have the know-how to do it on my own.
BTW,my only local authorized Daewoo repair shop wanted even more !

The car is a 99 Lanos DOHC 1.6 hatch

So now I am asking if there is anyone in or within an hour of Las Vegas that's done these repairs and knows what they are doing and can help me change these out if i get the parts and come to you ? It goes without saying that I'll pay cash for someone willing to help me out. I'll even throw in a case of beer. :)

I found some links online where i can get the parts
http://www.drivewire.com/daewooparts/ca ... gbelt.html
http://www.drivewire.com/daewooparts/ca ... ensor.html
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 8059157321

Can someone let me know if these are all ok,or any alternatives.
Hopefully someone can help a fellow Daewho owner .

cheers

Naz

the cps should be under the recall, so it would be free at the stealership. the O2 sensor is really easy, but first you have to find out if its the first one or the second one (does it say bank one or bank 2 on the obd2 code reader) if its the first one its in the exhaust manifold (the 4 tubes coming off your cylinder head) all you do is disconnect the battery, disconnect the wire plug that is close to the sensor( the plug is in the wires). get the proper size closed end wrench, and take it off (remember righty tighty lefty loosy), then reconnect the plug and connect your battery. if its the second one you just do the same steps, but its a bit down the exhaust. very simple

thanks man,,well i contacted Daewho to ask if the CPS is covered under the recall, but they told me i have to let them know the VIN to make sure it is one of the ones affected,as not all were apparently,so i fired that back to them and have not had a reply as yet.

I contacted the only official Daewho repair place in my area,(not a dealer AFAIK) and he said that it is a stupid recall,as only the inspection is covered, but the repair isnt,so i would have to pay for the part ($125!!!)and labour(another $275). I thought that was a bit weird,is he trying to put one over on me? Shouldn't the entire cost be covered? I need to hear from Daewho, see what they have to say on that.If he is an official repair guy trying to scam people when it should be free, then thats not cool.

If i can get it done for nothing i will take it to him,but if not,i wont bother becasue he wanted like $400 to do it. RIP.

OK,the code that comes back for the 02 sensor is
P0133 O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

So thats the one you are talking about right? If its easy enough for me to do myself then i'll just get the part and do it. Is it possible for you to post any pics of it's location so i know exactly where it is?

thanks

Oh it WAS that one. I saw that but didnt think it was it because it looked like it was in too convenient a location,I was expecting it to be tucked away somewhere that involved scraping of the knuckles etc :)

thanks

btw, where is the CPS located ?

The dealership that told you that the recall was 'inspection only' was straight up lying to you. The parts and labor are covered under the recall, the guy is trying to rob you.

The Cam Position Sensor replacement requires a bit of wiring, a new fuse, and a new cam position sensor. It is ALL covered under the recall. Go to www.DaewooUS.com and look up a list of the nearest DEALERSHIPS in your area... not some two bit repair shop who lies to you.

Chances are, you're covered under the recall (most Lanos are). Then you'll set an appointment with the dealership to bring it in and they will do everything for ya. Takes about an hour or two for the job to be completed.

Cost = FREE!!! FREE!!! FREEEEEE!!!!!

Hehe... As for the O2 Sensor... well... that isn't under recall, so you'll probably have to buy one of those.

Oh... and since you're contacting a dealership, if you have AC equiped in your Lanos, chances are the AC switch needs to be replaced as well. The switch for the AC units are also under recall.

Thanks Johnny,i figured that about the guy, that he was bullshitting me. It just didnt sound right when he told me that.

The nearest actual Daewho dealer is 83 miles from me,but if i find i can get it done for free, then i can treat it as a day out.
i spoke to that dealer and they said as long as i bring the recall notice from Daewoo, they can do it for free. Now i just have to sweat it out and hope that my car is covered under that recall. But they sure take their time in getting back to me ! I just wrote back to them again to make sure they got it. I tried to call them, but all you get is a recording saying to leave a message, and they will 'call you back' ,yeah right, when it suits them.

As for the 02 sensor,I just looked at that, took it off and put it back on again just to see how easy it was.Took 5 to 10 minutes. So that part i am going to do myself, becasue like Daewoomofo said,it was easy.So thats going to save me $150 right there by doing a 10 minute job myself.

Ok I bought my CPS from this guy and it was easy to do with a friend (he holds the cam cover back as you change it ) it takes time and small hands (we ended up switching places as I have fat hands) I bought it from this guy and it was great deal

I bought my whole belt and pump and pully kit from this guy and I will be installing it as soon as it stops raining in CT (seams like never)

Thanks for the links slammed, the cam pos sensor was a link that i had found already,so i guess if someone else has bought from there and done it and all is ok,then i may get it too (unless Daewoo tell me i can get the free fix of course!)

May go for the belt and pump and pully kit too,but like you said,I need to find someone to help. Not been here long so dont really know anyone,or at least,no one who knows what they are doing, and I'd rather at least one of us had some knowledge if we would be working on it together.

Let me know how the install goes with that, maybe post some pics of its progress during the install?

that will be a good description of the 2nd O2 sensor.

the CPS is located between the cam gears at the top of the head, it is behind both gears so it is kinda tricky to get it but it is doable.

OK,well i am almost getting this thing sorted out. I heard back from Daewoo ,they told me that the recall on my vehicle consists of the CPS and the Passenger Airbag bracket (didnt know about this second one). Anyway,i called the dealership in AZ,and they can fit me in to get it done. They are 80 miles from me,but i told them i would rather go to them than the scammer just down the road from me.I told the guy about that and he couldnt believe it.

Out of interest I asked how much they would charge for labour to do the Timing belt/water pump etc at the same time if i supplied the parts, and that would be $92.50 per hour !!! Makes $50 an hour seem cheap !!

So I guess I'll still be looking for someone to help me on the fitting of those parts too.

I have ordered the new 02 sensor, and will replace that in a few days when it arrives, and once the CPS is done then it will have saved me a total of $503

Is this Timing belt/w pump kit worth getting? Its the one that slammed posted above. Has anyone else here used this brand,is it any good,or should i find a better brand?
