Custom Parcel Tray

Post by whitetiger2nv »

Hey guys im thinking bout doing a holiday project to my car since im on hols lol...i was thinkin of replacing the parcel tray with a PVC cut out the same size as the parcel tray, and then cover with white faux leather...with padding underneath and then fit 2 6x9s in the tray...

- does anyone have any ideas how i would be able to attach the white faux leather to the pvc? (staple gun underneath maybe?)
- What kind of padding should i use to have that cushiony leather seat feel?
- and does anyone know whether it would be reccomended to have the parcel tray hoists included...so that the parcel tray goes up with the boot? are they used for support aswell as lifting with the boot?

and finally do you think the pvc will be heavier than the parcel tray? or do you think i should use different material?

sorry for all the questions but i wana do this right...i ahve a 2000 model daewoo lanos hatchback

First... I'm not sure what you mean by parcel tray, but that's probably because I have a sedan.

As for the faux leather you want to do, easy.

For the padding use some kind of squishy thin foam. You will want to cut it to the shapes you need to cover the whole thing with one even layer. Then using some kind spray adhesive (test on some foam scraps to make sure it doesn't melt your foam since some adhesives can melt foam), spray down the surface you're attaching the foam to. Trim the foam to the desired shape after you have applied it all.

Next, get your faux leather and get a rough feel for how much you're going to need. Then cut out the shape you need leaving plenty of extra. Next spray some adhesive on some of your foam and lay the matching portion of the leather over the foam and press firmly. then pull back the unglued portions of the leather and spray some more. Then press that section down. Be careful to avoid any wrinkles and such as you're going along. Pull and stretch and glue down the remaining parts of the leather. You will probably have to cut flanges in the corners and along rounded edges so that the leather doesn't bunch up in spots.

Once you get the entire top of the thing 'shrink wrapped' with your leather, flip it over. Now fold the leather over the back side a couple of centimeters and use some nice strong glue to stick the end pieces to the back side of the parcel tray.

That should explain it pretty well. If you get confused, look up upolstering tutorials on google, I'm sure you'll find some more info on the subject there.

Good luck and post picks when it's done! :)

Just my 2 cents(or pence!) worth,I would suggest using hot glue as opposed to spray-can glue.It sticks much better and dries in a few seconds, and dosent stink like spray glue.A small hot glue gun is dirt cheap, and so are the glue sticks that go with it.I used hot glue when i was putting together speaker enclosures for my other car,and it sticks like shit to a blanket.

PVC sure is different for a parcel tray! Why not use some 18mm MDF? It'll work perfect and it has been done before.

For attaching the faux leather - Staple gun to the underside sounds perfect. Just make sure you pull it tight and staple it so its all nice and smooth.
Some thin foam will be fine for padding it (i didnt pad it in the photo above).

You dont need to worry about the shoe laces that hold move the tray with the hatch.

Post photos when you're done! 8)
