F40 6 speed Transmission ( UPDATED !!! )
I've been researching the new Getrag F40 6speed transmission and I've finally made a breakthrough.
The F40 can be found in conjunction with the Z20LET ( iron block 2.0L turbo related to our engines)
The F40 can also be found in north america in two vehicles.... Saab 9-3 and Pontiac G6
The F40 in the G6 has a different bell housing because it's mated to a big 3.9L V6 but one company in the USA is using them for a Fiero LS2/6spd engine/tranny kit.
The good news is that he managed to pick one up brand new from a GM dealer for around $1600 (I will double check that number)
I have been unable thus far to get a good picture of the Saab 9-3 bell housing but I have a feeling it might be different.... so if any of you guys find pictures of Saab 9-3 6 speed tranny please post them here.
Needless to say.... the tranny should work with our engines if the bell housing attached to the Z20LET is used.
The pictures of the tranny look almost identical to the automatic transmission found in the Leganza ( I have one in my back yard that I compared it to )
I will dig up the links to show the tranny and it's specifications.... but Getrag Rates it at 295lbft of torque which means it should take upwards of 500lbft or more without a problem.
Another good thing about the F40 is that it's a very nice feeling tranny..... the F28 6speed is known to be a little clunky....and the gates are not perfectly aligned.
I'm definitly going to hunt for one or two of them.... you can buy the F40 from a scrap yard.... but I will have to see about how much the Z20LET style bell housing costs.

here are some links.... http://media.gm.com/us/powertrain/en/pr ... trans.html
If you go to the Pontiac G6 and click on "SS" under specs.... it brings up the info on the F40
Here is a great resource..... http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/059254.html
These guys have done piles of research on the F40 because they want to use them in their Fiero's

not sure of this man but it seems the F40 got different internals than our trannys - D16 or D20 - due to the fact that it is a 6 speed tranny but don't quote me on this as i am not 100% sure... it is just my logical analysis.

Someone on another forum said that the bellhousing holds some of the bearings..... it's a three shaft design to be more compact..... so I don't think the F40 internals are compatible with any other tranny.
Given there is an F40 bellhousing to fit our engines...... it's just a matter of finding out how to get one.
The Fiero guy bought a brand new F40 for something around $1550 USD (can't remember exact amount ) so it's actually a fairly cheap upgrade.
So far most of the scrap yards seem to want $1500 or more for a used 6spd Saab tranny.
If I get some time I'm going to try and get out to the Saab dealership.... we only have one and it's way out on the other side of the city.... which is about 15 - 20 minutes away driving at 50MPH

Ummm... ya.... I never go that fast
We have just under a million people here but the square area of Edmonton is close to that of Chicago!
So.... it means that it takes forever to get out to some of the businesses on the other side of the city....even if your on the freeway. (especially at rush hour)
We have at least two of every dealership except for Saab and Porsche.... and both are out on the far North West side of town (I'm in the South East )
We must have a dozen GM dealers but only two Saturn and one Saab
I wonder if anyone rents out Saabs in the city.... I could rent one for a weekend, pull out the tranny and see if it works in my Optra5. (wouldn't be the first time I've diassembled a rental car and put it all back together again )
I hope none of you work for Budget

New ones..... this tranny just came out.
The Saab's share their chassis with the Opel Vectra.
It seems every time I have a moment to drop by my local Saab dealership it seems they never have a 6spd version in the showroom.... and it's allways raining or I'm in a hurry.
