How to test a clutch to see if it is slipping?? *UPDATE*

tryed the 4th gear launch with hand brakes applied and the engine didn't stall immediatly... tried it on a '05 lanos as well and it didn't stall immediatly - took a bit less pedal travel than mine though - so i need another reliable test to check my clutch.

P.S: i was able to move the car forward in 1st gear with the hand brakes applied and rear wheels fully locked if that means anything testing wise.

the way I used to test is to leave it in lets say 2nd gear and floor it if it revs up real high and moves slow its slipping

as in going slow with 2nd gear engaged and suddnly floor it on clean tarmak... if the result is high engine revs + no corelated car speed = slipping clutch.

that is a good test indeed... will try it tomorrow anyways as i have been in this setuation many times due to my driving style and i can say it is not slipping... the engine is just not having enough low end torque to spin the heavy 14" steel rims i have.

If you can get your car onto a steep incline (like a hill) and try to do a handbrake start without the handbrake applied.

So hold the brake on, remove the handbrake and find the engage point of the clutch and try to creep the car. If you just roll back and you start to feel a slip then the clutch is gone

Thats how i normally do it...

The second gear thing works, I couldn't figure out why my friends clutch was slipping, it ended up his pedal needed adjustment as the clutch was never fully engaged...

If you rev really high in second gear, without much pickup, then you've got a worn clutch.

the hill idea is good and i do that on some traffic lights on steep uphills... car successfuly passed the clutch test, i have no engine revs/car speed problems.

i guess its all in the lost low end torque that i am trying hard to diagnose... i am getting desprate.

tried something today as i stll have doubts about my clutch.

while driving the car today i revved the engine too high when shifting to third gear and then i poped the clutch... the engine kept in high revs for a second or a bit more with the clutch fully engaged then the revs came down to match the car speed.

did the test again while going up hill and it took about 2 seconds or a bit more to come back to normal revs in comparason to car speed.

does this fall under the category of a "slipping clutch"??

I think it would. My friend has an older Del Sol, and I tried the same thing (revving up between gears and dropping the clutch), it keeps revving higher than the car's speed momentarily then comes back down. To me that seems like a slipping clutch. If the clutch is not slipping, you should either get jerked really hard or the wheels would spin.

well... other than this test car seems to drive OK so how much time or kms do i have on the current clutch with the mentioned condition? do i have to replace it right away or can it wait some time?

I can't say how many KMs you have left as that depends on how often you drive and your driving style. The slipping will gradually get worse and worse until it gets really annoying, so its sort of up to you when you want to change it.

mechanic tested the car and the clutch is slipping indeed... it can wait a while though as it is not that bad plus i am going into a headgasket + timing belt jobs this weekend and that will take a good chunk out of my bank account.
