slight problem here... help!

Post by Rodd1s »

ok ,so here's the story and details:
i have a 2002 lanos SE hatchback. the car still has its stock speakers, 1 in each front door and 2 in the back. when i bought the car i got a JVC head unit with it, brand new and working. the speakers have also been tested and they work perfectly. so the speakers are wired up, the head unit is wired up, but somewhere in between there is either a complete loss of connection, or something is missing.
basically, the head unit was tested with other speakers, and it worked. the speakers were tested with a little device that sends a current thru or something like that and the test results were good. there is power at both the speakers and head unit, but when i turn on the cd player, it is all well and starts playing through CD's, but there is absolutely no sign of a single sound from the speakers. not even that static distortion noise, nothing!
I've had it in a shop twice to try and get it hooked up, but no luck.

so what i want to know is...
- the wires from the speakers... where do they lead to?
- same goes for the speakers that are connected to the back of the head unit.
( i just wanted to ask before i go ahead and take the whole dash apart )
- if i can maybe trace thru all the wiring, maybe i cud find out where something is disconnected, or missing.

any help at all would be great!

only thing i can think of is the wiring harness that you buy for an aftermarket cd player. that harness is where all the speaker wire goes to. exactly which ones i'm not sure but thats where you need to look.

ok, ive checked the wire harness that plugs directly into the head unit, and it works fine, did a test using another speaker and it worked. so i think i know where the problem is now, it is somewhere in the factory fitted wiring between the speakers them selves and the ports/wires in the dash that connect to the wire harness. etc.
its dark outside now, so when i hav a chane I'll take off the door cards etc to check that the wires leading directly from the speakers are all in working order. and i will also check the wiring that connects to the cd player.

it's been 2 weeks and no sound... it's getting remotely boring!!

if i had the money I would just rebuild a full custom system from scratch, that would be so much easier... well some of it, at least.

i was considering re-wiring all the speakers, but in its current state the wires seem fine. im sure its something that no one has checked, like a fuse or something. currently there is no signal at all being sent to the speakers, so obviously somewhere a connection is lost at some point of connection (ie: a plug , fuse or harness)
i'm going to check the wiring around the speakers itself sometime soon.

and the fuses.... are there actually a set of fuses anywhere that would disable the speakers? in the one fuse box by the passengers-side footwell there is one fuse box which i havnt checked yet, need to find the diagram for it. or would it be in the fuse/relay box in the engine bay?

got to remove the panel... you need a special tool to get the window handle off unless you got power windows.

there should be about four or five screws. two at the bottom, i think one or two buy the hinges of the door on the panel and one in the handle of the door (not the door handle itself but that little pocket handle.

there is a brown wire that is the same color as one of the speaker wires and if you connect it to the head unit it will make no sound to any of the speakers..

ok! dont worry people! all sorted out!

i took Domwoo's advice to check for the brown wire, but it ended up being 2 white wires that were misplaced. either that or the rear right speaker is blown... i cudnt be bothered to try any other combo's of wiring... cos the two in the front, combined with one speaker in the back is enough until i get a custom system.

thanx for the help!!

seeing as i got my sound system sorted out and working, i've decided to replace the 2 rear speakers with some 3-way 6x9 inch 200Watt speakers.

does anyone know what size the stock rear speakers are in the Lanos? (for future reference)
