transmission pan fix

Post by bolek »

Driving on the highway at about 75 MPH I hit a piece of metal lying on
the road. I made it home fine but when I went to the car later, most
tranny fluid was on the ground, and I found a small hole in the pan.
Can this be welded (steel?-aluminum?) :?:

That sucks... :( I believe it's steel... and might be able to be welded shut, but I would probably never trust it again.

www.Junkyarddog.com and fill in the blanks. There is probably one out there for ya.

Oh... and most certainly don't drive it until it's fixed... AT ALL.

Might not be a bad idea to look for any other damage... pain in the ass, yes... but for your safety, please have a look.

Auto? or Manual?

Auto. I'm going nowhere until it's fixed.

Just go to any local junkyard and you should be able to find a pan for the transmission. The 4T40-E transmission found on the Lanos is found on about a dozen other American cars, just do an internet search for cars that use the 4T40-E and aim for those in the junkyard. I got mine for about $4.00.

Well, the good news is, I fixed the pan and it's not leaking.
The bad news is, I think I need a new transmission.
It drives, but it's hardly pulling in first gear and it's getting
worse ( I think it's called slipping ).
Looks to me like somebody is going to be looking for a
used tranny. :( :x :smt022 :smt012

Double and triple check to make sure that you have the right amount of fluid and the right type of fluid in the transmission. A wrong amount or an incorrect type of fluid will cause hell in the transmission.

It took 4 QT. before fluid started coming out of the hole on the
front of the tranny housing ( I got that info from the dealer ).
I used Mobil 1 synthetic Mercon V fluid.

Wait, did fluid start coming out of the top where you fill it or at the fluid level plug where you tested the level?

Maybe you should go get a tranny flush to clean out any gunk that may have gotten in there.

It came out of the fluid level plug.
I put a bottle of Lucas additive that helps with slippingand it doesn't slip
much anymore, but this is just a temporary fix. :smt093
