Can't get the rear wheels off... HELP!

Post by JohnnyC »

Okay... so I'm trying to rotate my tires... but I've run into a snag.

The rear tire has some thing in the middle that won't let the tire off or something... what the hell is this and what do I do to remove the tire?

Image

For comparison... here is a front wheel that doesn't have that annoying thing on it.

Image

Please! Any advice would help.

Things I've tried... PB Blaster... a hammer... yanking on it... kicking it... swearing at it.... nothing... seems as solid as a rock on there.

damn... because my front tires are getting bald and that back one with all the nice tread would go well in the front if I could get the bloody thing off... it's driving me crazy. I suppose I'll just put the front tires back on and call it good... Unless someone knows what those things are and/or how to get the thing off. :(

indeed... you got a shit load of rust that is clogging it in... their is nothing more than the 4 bolts holding the wheel to the brake drum.

Holy cow your wheels are rusty!

That's what you (people living in snowy climates) get for using all that salt on the roads.

yeah that center hub thing isnt holding it on, only rust is holding it on, id say take your car and support it but the jack, but dont lift it off the ground, (only lift the body nit the suspencion) take the lugs off and then kick the living crap out of it, i had a flat tire about a month ago and it took me 10 min to get my tire off, its a major PITA!

Yeah, same thing happened to me when I ran a few months without the center caps of my alloys. It looks like you ran without hubcaps, which is a bad idea, I know they look like hell, but they keep the rust away and keep you from running into that problem.

Pretty much, get a LARGE rubber mallet, several cans of penetrating spray, and beat the living hell out of it. If that doesn't work, time for plan 'B'.

Pretty much, brace your Daewoo really well, get a friend with a truck, chain up your wheel to the hitch, and tell him to pull away VERY SLOWLY, almost in idle. Your tire will come off

However, I really don't recommend that last measure, because I don't know just how tight the wheel is rusted to the axle, and I don't want you to run the risk of breaking or pulling an axle.

Just take it to a tire place and give them $20 to take it off.

ummm.... not sure about this but you can losen the bolts a little bit - some 2 or 3 turns max. - and with the car sitting on the tires (i.e. not jacked up) push the rear end sideways - left to right back and forth - so that you use the car's weight to break the rust bond.

on a very crazy scale you can losen the bolts same as discribed then go for a hand brake turn at some 20 MPH or so... this is quite dangerous - and crazy - thing to do so i recommend against it unless you are really desprate.

Its getting deadly! :smt068

Just use an air chisel and chisel away at the wheel. It will probabally damage your wheel beyond repair, but you can get a new steel wheel for a few bucks. When it is off, sand off the excess rust so that you get a nice mating surface and always use hubcaps!

haha... I hate that they use salt on the roads here. They could use so many other things to give us traction on the road.

I never did get it off last night. hehe... I'll probably try again in a day or two.

I plan on replacing all the tires and wheels anyway... but I mean damn... what a pain in the ass.

When my wheels were in such bad shape as those are....I had to use a 30 lb. sledgehammer and give it a few good hard "love taps" from behind to pursuade them off.
