Hi m8, as the compression is still within acceptable limits would a intake valve problem affect the compression test more?

yes a faulty valve will cause a problem in the compression test.

U R M8 :)

Please don't stop thinking as all ideas greatly appreciated. I've got a mechanic friend going to take a look later this week if I don't get it sorted.

I really need to learn english further  .

If there is a problem around #15 to #18 intake is it any chance that your engine cyl #3 only breath trough exhaust valve without draining any fuel mixture?

Got a couple of cans of intake cleaner and spent the day cleaning the throttle body, idle valve and all the breather & intake hoses. Was a lot of crap in there. The car runs more smoother but still not firing on #3.

Thanks for the diagram I am beginning to think you are right about a valve problem. I have only done a static compression test but I read here about doing a running compression test which may show up more problems than the static test. http://www.misterfixit.com/dyncompr.htm

My local garage is going to have a look on Friday. If it is the valves is that a big job to fix. Does the head have to come off?

By removing the valve cover and turning engine by hands maybe you can see if there is any difference in items motion. If you need to change valve(s) then yes the head has to be removed. Hard job?? Never done it on a Daewoo.

Dropped it off today but it will be around middle of next week when mechanic gets around to looking at it. Will let you know the outcome once I know. It drives much better now I've cleaned out all the pipes intake and TB, but still nothing happening in cyl #3. As there is only 3 pots firing I'm thinking of changing the Lanos badge to a Matiz :D :D

Thanks for the replies guys. Mechanic has had a look and it's a worn camshaft lobe. So off with its head.

a little odd... but it makes sense if nothing else checks out... i bet the intake lobe is messed up so it's never getting air/fuel inside the cylinder

exactly... the strange bit is why only cyl. 3 lobes are worn?? shouldn't all of them be similarly worn??

we've seen people have individual lobes break off their cam shaft, so i don't see why it's too awfully strange that only one set is, though i think it's more a valve/tappet problem, that is causing the irregular wear (like a stuck valve that has ground metal off the cam)

I will ask the mechanic about the condition of the other lobes and why only #3 is stuffed. The car has done 85,000 miles so I wouldn't have thought under normal conditions to wear out so soon unless like you say there is another problem that has caused it like a sticky valve or blocked oil passage to that area. Will see what mechanic says.
