adding foglights

Post by kinkyllama »

Well I just got foglights from the dealer (yeah, i got ripped). They could only get my the foglights and brackets, no wiring stuff. What kinda universal wiring stuff do I need to make this work?

Not entirely sure about what kind of wiring stuff you will definately need, but I do know that if you look under the dash on the drivers side wall, there is a plastic panel (where your fuses are inside the car). Back closer to the pedals behind that plastic panel is a red wire with a connector housing attached to it. I think that is fog light power connection (or at least what I was told). I used mine to power my tach though hehe. :)

I may not know a lot... but I try to help with what I think might be useful. :)

well not exactally sure about the power to the lamps themselves, but you could find which wires go to your head lights switch and just tap into that to control the on/off of the lights themselves.

I bought a factory dash fog light switch, which goes where the black plate is next to the clock, the opposite side of the emergency flashers.

I found a Leganza at the junk yard with fog lights and got the wiring harness plug that goes from the factory harness into the fog light switch, then figured out which wires do what.

I took my dash guages out and found which wire makes the fog light indicator light up in the guages and ran a wire into the guage cluster wiring harness to the new fog light switch.

Inside the dash behind the radio, I tapped into the switched power from the ignition to the radio so I had a switched 12V source for the switch.

I tapped into a 12V constant source for powering the lights and ran that to a relay and the other side of the relay to the new fog light switch.

Then I ran the 12V source wire through the firewall to the fog lights and grounded the fog lights to the radiaror frame, which I drilled into, cleaned off the paint, used a nut & bolt with ring terminals on the wire, then painted over it all with liquid electrical tape.

The wiring to the fog lights has been run inside black crinkle split loom so it looks just like the rest of the factory wiring.

Now, when I turn the ignition to ON and press the new fog light switch on the dash, the fog light indicator lights up on the dash and the fog lights turn on.

If you want wiring pin-outs for the switch, I am going to have to pull everything apart, as is the same for the dash light indicator light. :)

Advance Auto Parts, Autozone, Pep Boys, etc. all sell simple, cheap, fused and relayed aftermarket fog light kits. Simply buy the OEM Fog light switch and integrate it into the aftermarket wiring harness. It is quicker and easier (though granted not cleaner) than what Oz did. Basically you won't need an indicator light because most fog switches come with an indicator light built in.

Hey i have a stock bumper bar a with the lines for the foglights already etched into it, what would be the easiest way to add in foglights? cut out the shapes and but an aftermarket foglight kit?

Also as in the 'engine/intake/exhaust' section i have a cai installed, should i take out the front right foglight panel and extend the airfilter to sit right behind that hole, or just leave it where it is?

Leave it where it is. Sounds like it's currently being protected from excess water getting to it. If you put it right behind the open fog light hole and then drive in some heavy rain, you'd drench your filter.

I personally would go with amber light for the fog lights. I was reading about how amber light has the best eye perception/penetration into fog... hense the name... fog lights! hehe.

When you said you have shapes in your bumper for the fog lights already, does that mean you have the sport bumper with the inserts? Would be a small round spot in the center of the inserts.

The bumper is fully sealed, i'd just need to take a stanley knife (razor blade) to it and cut them out.

Hmmm I don't understand. You said you have a stock bumper. Is it like mine in my sig or does it look different. I'm asking because it's hard to give you opinions and stuff about how to mount it if I don't know which bumper you have (there are two different stock bumpers for the Lanos, Sport and Normal). So I'm just trying to establish which one you have.

No my bumper isnt like yours, i have the stock 93' Racer/1.5i

What i meant by 'i'd just need to take a stanley knife (razor blade) to it and cut them out' is that i can see the outlines where they would go, i've run my finger over them in these next two pics so you guys can see them (dodgy camera phone)
