the front speakers are 4 inchers, the rears are the ones that are 5.25 inchers. yes the speakers go through the door panels, they are actuallyt mounted on the outside (part you see) of the door pannel. the speakers and the grills are screwed to the door pannels and the speaker goes through the hole you cut out of it (i just cut out the stock grilling) its super easy
The front speakers are 4" stock.
I'll try to explain the best I can for the step by step:
Part 1:
1. Remove the window handles.
2. Remove the screws along the bottom of the door.
3. Remove the screw in the "pull it shut" handle.
4. Remove the molding around the door handle... You'll want to be a bit careful as these have a tendency to crack. Don't worry too much if it does, you can always super glue it back together.
5. Pry the interior molding off using flat-head screwdrivers. It's a little tough to get off, but once you do the first door you'll have a feel for the second.
6. Remove the old speaker.
7. Remove the old speaker housing (located behind the speaker).
8. Repeat all the steps above for the second door.
You should now have your interior molding separate from the car. Take both interior moldings someplace comfortable that you can work.
Part 2:
1. Using a carpet knife or other sharp knife, cut out a good portion of the grill in the door panel where the holes are. This will give you room to cut along the rim.
2. Using a pair of cutters/snips, cut along the outside ring of the grill using small cuts all along the way.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other door.
4. Place your speaker in the hole and rotate it around until you are satisfied with it's position.
5. Bend the tabs in the corners of the speakers using your fingers or a small hammer to shape them to the shape of the molding.
6. Drill small pilot holes down through the holes in the tabs for your speaker (leaving the Sony grill off for now). Don't drill really fast, just do it nice and slow, it'll sink right through the plastic.
7. Place the Sony grill on the speaker aligned with the holes.
8. While holding a clip on the back side of the door panel, screw each screw 95% into their clips from the front (so the screws are open to the inside of the car).
9. Tighten all the screws the rest of the way (you may have to hold the clips with a pair of pliers or something to keep them from spinning.
10. Repeat steps 4 through 9 on the other door panel.
Part 3:
1. Take your door panels with the speakers installed with them back out to your car.
2. Cut the wires leading to the original speaker plug housings (cut just behind the plugs).
3. Strip the wires about a centimeter or so.
4. Strip the wires for the connectors that came with your speakers.
5. Attach the wires from the car and the speaker wires together. I believe that the wires with the line on them are the negative wires... but I might not be remembering right.
6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 for the other door.
7. Remove the clip from the window handle and temporarily place the handle on the door. Roll the window all the way down and take the handle back off.
8. With the door panel at a slight 15 degree angle. get the front part of the door panel back into place and slide the rear side of the door panel down until it is back in position. (a little tricky at first)
9. Lay down on the ground and connect your wires up to your new speaker and try and push any excess wire inside the door well.
10. Repeat steps 7 through 9 for the other door and test the speakers to make sure they're working.
11. Using your hand like a hammer... slap your door panel along the edge to get it to "snap" back into it's holder.
12. Replace all the screws holding your door panel in place (including the "Pull it closed" handle.
13. Replace the molding around the door handle.
14. With the clips still off of the window handle place it on the gear and roll your window back up.
15. Take the handle back off again, replace the holding clips, put the backing back on it and place it back on the gear. *NOTE* make sure you put it on at the angle you want "Closed" to be and match that angle on both doors.
16. Repeat steps 11 through 15 for the other door.
17. Rejoice in your new speakers which look so much cooler then your old ones and sound better too!
I still haven't found a replacement handle that will work on my door that is short enough not to bump the grill of the speaker. All you have to do to roll the window up or down is pull slightly to the inside of the car when rolling and it will miss the grill.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Good luck!
Nice guide, I will have to try this again soon - I did it with some 4" speakers, but I'd like to replace the horrible looking grill, and put some 5" in there!
Does it matter if you get the negative and positive wires the wrong way around with speakers?
The speakers work whatever way round you put them in - I don't know if mine are "wrong" or not.

Yep, it matters. Otherwise they may not be "in phase".

Damn.
Is there anyway to check this other than looking at the speakers when they're on?
I have no idea which is positive and which is negative now lol.
That link says I would only need to switch round the positive and negative on one speaker only - is that true? What if both rear speakers are wrong for example, would I only have to switch one?

No chance lol.
I will probably change to electric if I can find the parts.
Maybe cut up the handles for now.
