Woo Time

Post by samson_420 »

I am sereously considering getting a Daewoo Leganza. I think they look sweet and have very nice features, specialy for the price. I do all my own work on the cars I own. Is there anything very difficult to do on the Leganza? I mean is everything comparible to most cars. I think it would be, but I might as well ask. Also is there any manufacturer problems, like exsessive oil consumption (my Satun burns a Quart every 1 thousand miles), transmission problems, etc?

Thank you all in advance. . . . . . . . . . . . .

take care of the timing belt (replace every 40-50k miles) and it's good to go...

as far as compatibilty what do you mean?

Is the Leganza comparible when it comes to working on it? What is the issue with the timing belt?

timing belts are the weakest point in all woos. they tend to snap at about 60,000 miles so to be safe change it from 40k-50k. some have been known to break at 38k miles. and since woo engines are interference engines if it snaps everything else still moves which mean at the very least bent valves.

Basically, the 2.2L in the Leganza is an engine that is comparable to most of the other engines in the world. If you are good with regular service (Oil every 3k miles, air filters, oil/fuel filters) then your Leganza should last you a hell of a long time. My Lanos completed 200,000 miles yesterday on a 150 mile trip to Gainesville going at 80 miles most of the way. These are good engines, if you take care of them.

The main issues that might arise with the Leganza are:

1. Timing belt: If your's breaks, you're screwed. Your valves will bend and you will need a new head. Be sure to change the Timing belt/tensioner/pulley/water pump every 50,000 miles to make sure this never happens to you. (Dealer recommends 90,000 miles, but DO NOT TAKE THAT CHANCE). It isn't very hard or expensive to do this.

2. Ignition coil: These have been known to go on our cars after a few years of use. Quick and easy fix.

Other than that, the car is very very reliable.

All good to know. When replacing the timing belt. Is it nesessary replace both of the idlers also? I know the tensioner migh as well be replaced. Are the Automatic Transmissions ever a problem? I realy like having a standard , but the Leganza only comes in AT.

I'm pretty sure you can get a Leganza in Manual (standard), you just have to look for them. I have seen them around.

As for the automatic transmissions. The 4T40E transmission holds up like a beast. I've never had a single problem with mine, and none of the other members have mentioned anything.

i have a 98 leganza with a 2L, and the only problems i have had have been from neglect and poor quality mechanics, but since i have started to really look after it it has run really well with no dramas. The autos arent bad, but i had a bearing fail in mine which meant i had to get a new transmission. That is not a common problem, i was just unlucky that it happened to me

ive had problems with my auto trans but thats cause i BEAT THE SHIT out of it, but its still a good trans. if you maintain the car it will last you along time. and when i day that i beat the shit out of my trans... i (sadly) abused it alot, but im treating her right now so no more problems. people make fun of daewoo's but they are really great cars if you maintain them, get a leganza and you wont be disapointed!

They seem to me like pretty damn good cars for the Buck. I mean I see Leganzas with like 50-75k for around 5 Grand. That is a pretty good price. If I do get one, I think just lowering it and putting some nice wheels on it will make it look real nice. Specialy when I de-badge it.

Hmmm... I don't know if it adds to a "clean" look in my opinion... I dunno... almost seems a disrespect to the brand.
